  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Looks good the top one has a more solid feel, the mass of the rock looks solid and structured.
Thanks! The top one was more palette knife with chunkier paint which probably helped in that regard.

Yes, those broad strokes look good on there and reinforce the feel of the rocks.

Palette knives are great to paint with, i do either all of my work on a painting with a palette knife or at least 90%.

One really positive part of using a palette knife is the colors can be kept really clean.

Looks very good. The rock is nearly perfect in my eyes. Maybe you could do more small details in the field in front of it. But anyway if you want to stop it is okay like it is :). What technique did you use? Ist this watercolour/aquarell or acryl? Or oil?

Thanks. These are both acrylic on canvas panels. For technique I did the initial generic 'block' in with just greyish lights and darks and then added a second layer with the palette mixed colors using mostly large flat brushes and sometimes a palette knife. I'm finding new ways to varnish to make them look more like oil paintings. (I recently did a watercolor seascape that I varnished with a two part epoxy resin that makes it look so much like an oil painting it would probably fool most anyone. )

Just curious why you do not use oil paint.

Sorry for the late response (I was out of town for a few days. ) I used to use oil exclusively. I don't like the solvents and even the smell of linseed oil gives me a headache. Also you should wait 6 months or more before varnishing. Oil is a slow process. Acrylic is odorless and thins so nicely with water. I've used the 'water soluble' oils but the don't really live up to the name. I did learn that you can mix a little glycerin into acrylic paint which slows the dry time and gives that oily glow to the acrylics. Plus varnishing helps.
