If you were marooned on a desert island for a long time and could choose to have any 5 Christian books with you (apart from the Bible), which would you choose? I'm looking for a recommendation since I was recently given some money with which to buy a new book but I've no idea what to go for. I can't afford to buy a book often so I don't want to foozle the opportunity.

My top 5 would include:
  1. The Letters of John Newton
  2. 'The Preciousness of God' by Octavius Winslow
  3. 'A Practical View of Christianity' by William Wilberforce
  4. 'The Goodness of God' by John Wenham
  5. 'The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul' by by Philip Doddridge

Our Thoughts Determine Our Lives by Elder Thaddeus of Vitovnica

By the way - I never seem to find the books I really want (often out of print but either way even used paperback copies often go for $20 and up)

but depending on what you're looking for, bargains can be found. Sometimes books on eBay go for less than $3 including shipping, and https://www.bookfinder.com/?ref=bf_s3_hd_1 is a great source to compare prices from all over.

"MATTHEW HENRY's BIBLE COMMENTARY" for obvious reasons.

"WALKING WITH GOD" - JC Ryle Possibly my favourite Christian book, it is an abridged version of his book "Practical Religion" very easy to read and understand, yet so soul searching. He wrote in the 1800s but it could be today.

"FOXES BOOK OF MARTYRS" to remember what it cost for us to have our Bibles and to inspire.
ONE BOOK, ONE AUTHORITY by Douglas Stauffer. 2000 years of Bible and Church history .A big book but used over and over, a mine of information.

I think that would do me on a desert island!
