It ultimately comes down to what 12 regular members of the community think is obscene, at least within the definitions the judge and lawyers will present them with. I'd don't imagine those movies would fit the definition of obscenity, especially given the strong ratings attached to both films that deem them generally inappropriate for minors.

According to the all-knowing Wikipedia: The book begins with the boys' arrival on the island after their plane has been shot down during what seems to be part of a nuclear World War III.[11] Some of the marooned characters are ordinary students, while others arrive as a musical choir under an established leader. With the exception of Sam, Eric, and the choirboys, they appear never to have encountered each other before. The book portrays their descent into savagery; left to themselves on a paradisiacal island, far from modern civilisation, the well-educated boys regress to a primitive state.

Do you realize depicting, even through cartoons, sex acts involving a minor in the state of Florida, and under Federal law, is a felony and gets you on the sex offenders registry?
Evidently true, unless you are a teacher - then people will defend your actions.

I don't view this as an issue of "my tribe"... I go to church with gay and trans people. I have no problem accepting gay and trans people.

Do you believe that their alternative sexual lifestyle is accepted by God?

Huh?

Is this your opinion or do you have some facts to back this up.

I support the policies of the church, which is to be an open and welcoming progressive Christian community.

I'm not used to thinking of LGBT persons as defined by an "alternative sexual lifestyle". Being lesbian, gay, or trans is just part of who a person is. That doesn't mean I would affirm any and all sexual practices, though, nor does the church I go to insist that I do so. People need to be responsible with their sexuality, and not engage in abusive or exploitative sexual practices.

I'm also against pornography or obscenity being in schools. I don't consider a book that merely talks about being gay as OK would be obscene, and I doubt most Americans would, either. However, a book that graphically depicts naked young men and sex acts (especially humiliating sex acts) of various kinds, even if it isn't "explicit", is understandable as to why people would want it to be removed as being inappropriate.

Sad...but not banned. A lot of this book banning hype is presented as if the state is doing it, and it's not.

That's just some advocacy group, essentially no different from the one pushing for smut in children's libraries to begin with.

I don't think protecting kids from ideas is the ultimate goal. I'm thinking the end goal is to lessen the number of kids who learn to think for themselves.

Lets try that again, FireDragon75, as i didnt ask you what your "church" thinks, says, does.
Ok?

I asked you.

Now, one more time...

I want you to think of it like this..

God is listening to your answer.
Keep that in mind..

Now, again....I'm asking you if you believe that God accepts alternative Bexual Behavior // Lifestyle.

And i'll dial that in for you..

Homosexual SEX : Same GENDER SEX : male or female.... Man with Man, or Woman with Woman = Does God accept this sexuality. ?

Indeed....

From the Wikipedia of Gender Queer...

In one commonly cited panel, a 14-year-old Kobabe fantasizes about a scene in which an older man touches the penis of a youth. The illustration is based on a piece of painted ancient Greek pottery depicting a "courting scene."[22][2] Detractors have described this as a depiction of pedophilia.[23][24

So it seems like Gender Queer definitely fits the definition of CP according to Florida. Perhaps if the author were to ever set foot in Florida, they would find themselves arrested.

Regardless, I don't think people understand the scope of the problem...

You see, for almost a year now, left wing publications like CNN, NYT, HuffPo, WaPo, and the like have covered stories about parents trying to ban this stuff from school libraries, and at least in one case, defunded a public library that refused to remove the offensive content...

These supposed news outlets have painted the story as one of "intolerant Christians" fabricating a "moral panic" because they hate the gays.

I noticed that Gender Queer was one of the books cited nearly every single time these stories, I looked up what the controversial content was, and was surprised to see the Christians got it 100% correct. It's a book that won an award for books aimed at 12-18yo children. All anyone had to do was in fact look up the book instead of just blindly believing whatever news sources they read.

To some poster's credit, I have seen them change their minds after defending this stuff for a whole year. That's better than nothing, but I don't see a lot of understanding why they were misinformed in the first place.

This is probably another case of the "Fox News Fallacy" in action, and these folks have not read the books in question. Either that, or CNN and the NYT have become completely morally debased. My guess is that many simply haven't read the book, or they are unaware of Florida and Federal laws against child pornography.

These supposed news outlets have painted the story as one of "intolerant Christians" fabricating a "moral panic" because they hate the gays.

I'm guessing alot of people that complain about these books aren't even in conservative Evangelical denominations, and some are probably not even particularly religious. They just don't want obscenity in schools under the guise of "inclusivity".

I don't think this is the appropriate forum to answer that personal question, as the sitewide rules prevent me from discussing that topic.

As a reminder, the News & Current Events forum does not permit a discussion of the morality of same-sex relationships: "Discussion and debate should only be directed toward political, legal, historical and civil rights issues, and should not be directed toward the morality of homosexuality, same-sex marriage, bisexuality or transgenderism/transexualism." This book is gay creates bait for pedophiles.

1. It encourages all children, not just gay ones, to try out various gay sex acts because "it feels good" for hetero people too.

2. It encourages multiple partners, even anonymously.

3. Instructs the reader on how to download gay sex apps onto their phone and meet up with partners online.

That is, of course, in addition to the multiple graphic information it provides in how to have all sorts of non-vaginal intercourse.

It's literally a book for creating victims of pedophilia.

Now, anyone who doesn't believe me can find on YouTube a horrified mother who exposes this book by literally going through it page by page. I suggest anyone who doubts my depiction of the book to find the video and give it a watch.

That's really bad, and could get kids into alot of trouble and/or physical danger. Encouraging kids to have anonymous sex and hookups are examples of behavior that is rife for exploitation and emotional harm (particularly for girls and young women), and this book should be thrown out of public school libraries for that reason alone.

Besides the inherent problem with the over-sexualization of minors, there are alot of real threats to kids out there from adult predators, and occasionally those types of people to try to infiltrate LGBT spaces and apps, looking to prey upon a vulnerable population who are often naive and desperate for approval.

You can tho eagerly discuss a culture that wants to TRAIN and Indoctrinate kids with sexual information overload when they are developing, so that they are led into "gay" behavior by school curriculum, = being TAUGHT to believe that sexual identity is a choice for them to make in 1st Grade, 3rd grade, or similar.
God would define this as "evil".
It would be interesting to find out how your "church" defines it.
Perhaps they would decline to answer and instead refer me to the "forum rules" or, they would try to spin the question into a conversation about "book burning" and "book banning" and "crazy radical fundamentalist Christians"..

You think so?
Me too.

And you already told us FireDragon76.... that your Church's standard regarding alternative sexuality, is to accept it, so, you do also based on what your "church" has led you to think and believe.
So, as they are soft on Sexual SIN, so defined by the word of God... then you are an example of what they create..... as you have defined yourself.

Ok, i see.

Well, here is the main thing.
Let no church, let no culture, let no political correctness... let no "woke" madness, lead you to believe that God approves of sexuality that is not able to reproduce the species.
God does not.

Did your church explain to you that a "gay"person, is so defined by their sexual lifestyle, only?
THat's what defines them in the CULTURE as Gay.
They are not defined as "gay" or "homo" based on their desire to paint rainbows on their car......they are defined as "gay" based on their SEXUAL LIFESTYLE, and that sexual lifestyle cannot reproduces the species.

Just so you know. FireDragon76

As a reminder, the News & Current Events forum does not permit a discussion of the morality of same-sex relationships:

Perhaps you can understand that a discussion that is related to the cause and effect of showing obscene material to children, can't avoid the subject of "is it moral". or "is it morally damaging".

It could be understood also that the reason for the "book ban" is to avoid subverting the morality of a child.

And it has to be understood that for school curriculum to be designed to offer morality damaging books to children, if discussed on any Thread can't avoid the question of morality.

After all, what is the issue with banning these books, if it isn't to counter the effect on the morality of children.

Ok then.

- Carry on.

To read the description @PloverWing gives one the impression that it's a textbook of sorts.

It's not a textbook.

It's a book that any 12yo could easily read, follow the pictures, and then find people willing to engage in those sex acts with using hookup apps.

I think there wad a viral video of a mother trying to read from the book, which was obtained at her children's school library, and her mic is cut off because of the sexually graphic content. The absurdity of the situation is ridiculous.

I'm not Christian, I'm an atheist. I genuinely have no hatred towards gay people. I believe however, that treating them as equals....requires holding them to the same standards as any heterosexual people. I wouldn't want that book near children if it only described heterosexual acts. I wouldn't trust heterosexual adults who want to teach those things to little children.
