It was a formula movie but reasonably well written and acted with a nice foreshadow early on which doesn't live up to its billing. Clive Owen did a good job as did Vincent Cassel.
Jennifer Aniston's supporting role in this film doesn't capitalize on her current tabloid stardom, her Friends base or prove that she has any kind of range as an actress beyond what she already accomplished with "The Good Girl".
Of course, it isn't like this is a memorable film for Clive Owen's career either. It almost seems like both signed on to this flick to pay the bills rather than grow as actors (or increase their value in Hollywood).
Giancarlo Esposito as Detective Church was just plain awful. His acting was bad and the character was poorly written.
I thought the use of lighting to visualize internal emotion was effective, especially at the end of the second meeting on the train between Charles and Lucinda where the lights and shadows of pulling into the train station fall on Charles' face creating a visual image of his realization that his lust for her will likely be fulfilled and projecting the conflicting impulses he is feeling about it.
This is one of those movies where they dig the protaganist so deep in the second act that it becomes difficult to get him out while staying within the reality of the movie (ie. I just didn't buy into him getting that briefcase back at the end...too quick and tidy for this kind of a flick).
There is also a denouement after the climax that, while not overly long, was unnecessary and kind of annoying. Yes, if it wasn't there I would be complaining about why the shiv was introduced in the first place, but, I am going to ask anyways why the shiv was introduced and how that co-worker smuggled it out of prison...or even why he would.
Get rid of the shiv and the denouement and ramp up the emotion around the defeat of the antagonist in the climax and you would have a better movie.
This movie is a standard thriller based on a tried and true formula that, after about an hour, will have you saying "I've been here before in other movies".
It's not a bad movie but it doesn't do anything for anybody involved with it and doesn't move the genre forward at all. If Harry Potter is sold out, you don't like Johnny Cash or you are just in the mood for something a little off kilter than you might consider this movie.
