• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I'm probably the most depressed person in here, there isn't a day when I feel great for over five years.

Only things motivate me is movies that are good, it brings my mood up and make me forget things for a while.

Sometimes I just try to forget things and just go home and sleep or something.

It just seems my problems get more and more diverse though, from money to trouble with the law, gaming, school, love, you name it.

I just hope the next day is better though. You just need to remember that there is one other person that is more depressed than you are.

Not sure if someone else has already mentionned this, but target planning and having goals each day help me. Even if its just simple basic stuff like, cook a meal, go swimming, apply for a job, all these things are an achievement when you're depressed coz it can be hard to bring yourself to do anything at times. Start off with small things, but when you achieve these small things, it can help you feel you are coping, and moving forwards. Once you can do small things no problem, gradually increase your goals, and do those things. Just sitting around the house just makes me feel worse, but target planning helps a bit...I really need to listen to my own advice here coz I know its really not easy. Depression can make you just not want to do anything but sit in your room all the time but it's definetely worth it. I think also, having regular activities, i.e. a job, going to church, having a hobby, something you enjoy doing that puts you into regular contact with other people can help. They will help take your mind off it for a bit, and also helps you feel and realise you're still getting on with life despite what's going on.

Also, I have a self help book on CBT which helps me a bit. Recognising a lot of my negative thoughts is coming from my depressed state of mind, and the devil, rather than them being true helps me a bit, and trying to change my way of thinking so it matches up with God's opinions and knowing this can't have a hold over me completely and dominate the rest of my life, unless I let it :)

Music is very very helpful. And writing down some positive things about my day at the end of the day helps. Another thing I have found very very helpful is reading positive things. Reading takes focus and focusing on positive things is well worth the time. This site has helped me because I stay so busy reading and reading positive advice. : ) I love Jesus!:)

In this case, I suggest
www.settingcaptivesfree.com

By relying on Jesus, you shall live again.

I guess prayer would do ^_^

Thank you all for your ideas. Music and prayer are good ideas. I always have some music playing. Sometimes I pray very hard to feel better and it works. It isn't always instant feeling better. I have to work at it most of the time. My moods go up and down, too.

excerise is a great means to reduce stress and help overcome depression, Cardio is best for this as it floods the body with endorphions and the precursor to seratonin ( happy hormones!!)
walk, run, bike, roller blade for at least 30 minutes 3-5 times a week
excersise to where your breathing speeds up enough that you cant hold a converstion..

try this and see what a difference it makes not only with your depression but with your health overall.

Also...
your diet is a HUGE factor when it comes to health related issues including mental health...
many vitamins/minerals/herbs are beneficial to mental Health....
for Instance B-12 is proven to help with depression as well as SAM-E ( kinda pricey)
There is many good websites out there with Info backed up by legit reaserch..
you can change your mood simply by what you put in your mouth

Another thing I've done to help my depression is combatting negative thoughts. I write down the negative thought on one side of the paper and then find a counter thought that is positive and productive. I do this with each negative thought. Then I try to do it in my mind, too.
