• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi evryone,
I havent been in this section of CF before, but I thought I would venture in. I was diagnosed with post dengue fever depression last week. I never thought I would ever have anything like that. I cant sleep, I cant eat (Ihave lost 12 kilos), and everything seems so stressful and overwhelming. Everything is dark and miserable, :help:
The doctor wants to put me on anti depressants but I dont want to. If I lose any more weight they are going to make me. I dont want to eat though!
Anyone have any advice?
Thanks

First - *hugggggggggggggggggg* sounds HORRIBLE.

See if you can get hold of a product called Ensure. It's a full-nutrient powder often used when someone's sick and can't eat much... hospitals use it when a person can't eat solids. It's fairly nice... I used it myself when I'd been really sick for a couple of weeks and was feeling malnourished... but didn't feel much like eating. Sold in most chemists over here... can't see why it'd be different over there. Stick in some icecream and you have yourself a milkshake :)

I looked up the symptoms of dengue fever just to get an understanding of it. If I am correct, this is a depression brought on as a side affect from the condition. If this is correct, than the main thing that I would caution you about based on some of the statements you made, is not to let the condition cause you more stress and depression.

Chronic or prolonged illness can bring on depression, I have had chronic back problems for the last 3 years and I have had problems from depression because of it. I had to step back from the situation and take stock in how I was looking at the overall picture. Some of my thinking patterns that led to depression were things like "this is going to be like this the rest of my life", "I'm going to lose my job over this", "No body knows what I'm going through", "I need some meds to get through this (I used this to justify using alcohol)". These are all based on lies, I had to realize the truth and daily remind myself of it.

God is the God of the past, present and future. I can't rehash the past, don't know the future, all I know is now and that God hold's my life in my hands and will take care of the things of torrow and give me strength for today. Speculation about what the future hold only leads to depressing thoughts about something that hasn't even happened, and might not even happen. These are some of the things that helped get me through it. I'm still having chronic pain, but when I started focusing on the truth, the depression left and my health started to improve. Its a scientific fact that your emotional health affects your physical health drastically.

Hang in there and trust in His promises

Does your happiness depend on everything in your life being just right? If you think you can't be happy until all your circumstances are right, you will never be happy. We all experience times in life when we feel down for various reasons, but we can't allow our circumstances to control our emotions. Satan seeks to fill our minds with negative thoughts and emotions that cause us to feel down. He is a discourager, and he pulls us down emotionally, spiritually, financially, and in every way he can. But Jesus is our Encourager, and He came to lift us up. He came to give us righteousness, peace, and joy, and all these things cause us to feel up!
Everyone experiences times of frustration and distress over unfulfilled hopes and dreams. When things don't go according to our plans, it is normal to feel disappointment. But we must be careful how we deal with that feeling, because disappointment is the beginning stage of depression. If we remain in a state of disappointment for too long, it can turn into discouragement, despair, and finally depression. Psalm 30:5 tells us that ...Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. Things may make us feel sad temporarily, but we must not stay sad. Just as we cannot afford to stay mad very long, neither can we stay sad very long. If we do, Satan takes advantage of the open door and pushes his way further into our lives, bringing more serious problems with him.
DON'T TRUST YOUR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS
Our number-one enemy is emotions. We tend to be led by how we feel, but we must realize that feelings are fickle, they change from day to day! We should be careful not to follow every thought that comes to our mind because our thoughts and feelings don't dictate truth to us. For many years of my life, I experienced regular depression. I would awaken many mornings with a little voice in my head saying, "I feel depressed." I believed this was my own thought, not realizing that it was Satan making suggestions to me through my mind. Later, when God drew me into a closer walk with Him and I began seriously studying His Word, I learned that I didn't have to follow every feeling and thought I had. I began to speak aloud and say, "I will not be depressed." I learned to put on the garment of praise spoken of in Isaiah 61:3. We may not always feel like praising, but a victorious person does not have the luxury of living by feelings.
I've learned that staying disappointed can cause me to start feeling discouraged, which is a deeper problem than disappointment. But I've also learned that you can't be hopeful and discouraged at the same time. So as soon as the devil attacks us with disappointment and we start feeling discouraged, we need to turn to the Holy Spirit and allow Him to fill us with hope. A brief period of discouragement may not have a devastating effect, but long-term discouragement can lead to depression—a very serious problem.
RESIST THE DEVIL AND REJOICE IN THE LORD!
Depression is defined in part as "a hollow; being in a low state; a state of sadness; dejection." The real cause of depression is not where we are, but our attitude about where we find ourselves. It is possible to learn to live on the other side of your feelings. We will always have feelings, they will never go away, but we can make our feelings line up with our decisions. That's why God gives us the fruit of self-control. James 4:7 tells us to resist the devil, and we must also resist depression and anything that resembles it because it is of the devil. Philippians 4:4 says, Rejoice in the Lord always [delight, gladden yourselves in Him]; again I say, Rejoice! If we stay filled with the right thing, the wrong thing has no place.
If you don't let the devil impress you with what he does, then he can't oppress you. And if he can't oppress you, then he can't depress you. So choose to be led by the Holy Spirit and you can have victory over depression. We can choose to keep a hopeful attitude by renewing our minds with the promises found in God's Word. We can claim the promises as our own and stand in faith, believing God to help us overcome our feelings and move forward into better things. We can't control all of our circumstances, but we don't have to let what happens today ruin tomorrow. We can actually turn things around by making a decision to let go of the situations that caused the disappointment and discouragement and move toward the good things God has planned for our future. Many people are depressed because they can't face truth, but the Holy Spirit came to reveal truth to us. And we can't get past depression until we quit making excuses and blaming everyone else. We must face the truth and take responsibility for our actions. When we do that and ask God to help us, the spirit of heaviness leaves us and we feel light and free. Jesus tells us in Matthew 11:30: ...My burden is light and easy to be borne. Being depressed about circumstances does not change them, and is a total waste of time and a thief of joy. So we must stop letting our feelings, mind, body, and past experiences rule us and allow God to give us a fresh plan, a new idea, a new goal! You can experience victory over your emotions by being led, guided, controlled, and ruled by the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus sent to us as our Comforter, Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby to remain with us forever (see John 14:16). Thank God, we don't have to be disappointed, discouraged, despondent, depressed, or in despair. Jesus not only is the Way, but He is also the way out! Jesus is our healer, our glory, and the lifter of our heads.

I have learned something in my own pursuit of a stress-free life—if I want peace rather than the pressure of stress in my life, I must choose to seek direction from God in every situation.

Our God is a God of peace. He will always lead us toward peace and joy, not toward anxiety and frustration. Therefore, we have to be listening for His voice. By following His voice, we can find peace and overcome the stress that so many are dealing with today.

To find peace in our lives, we simply need to obey the promptings God gives us each day. A prompting is a "knowing" deep down on the inside, telling us what to do. First Kings 19:11,12 refers to this knowing as a still, small voice.

A prompting is not a whack on the head with a hammer! In 1 Kings, the Lord did not use the great and strong wind, the earthquake, or fire to prompt Elijah. His voice came to Elijah as a sound of gentle stillness and a still, small voice. A prompting doesn't even have to be a voice at all—in fact, God often gives direction by speaking to your heart rather than to your ears.

Since a prompting is very gentle, some might question whether it is from God or not. When you're unsure about a prompting, it's often easy to ignore it. One time, after I had been shopping at the mall for three or four hours, I sensed that God was saying, "You need to go home now." I had only purchased half of the eight items on my shopping list, so I ignored the prompting and kept on shopping.

The remaining items on my list were not immediate needs. But, like many determined, goal-oriented people, I was not about to leave that mall until I purchased every item on my list. I had come for eight items, and I was going to leave with eight items! I didn't care if I had to be dragged out of that mall, I wasn't leaving until every item was crossed off my list! And I wasn't going to listen to any voice that said otherwise.

I remember reaching the point of being so tired and upset that I wasn't even able to think clearly. All I wanted to do was finish shopping and get out of there. It was almost more than I could do to remain civil to the other shoppers and clerks in the store. I was stressed out!

Looking back, I can't remember how many times I've done that—stressing out because I've pushed beyond the prompting of the Lord. I can always tell I've gone too far when I'm not able to practice even the most basic manners—politeness, kindness, and self-control.

If I simply had obeyed the prompting of the Lord when I heard that "still, small voice," telling me to go home, I would have easily relieved the stress from the situation. Instead, I bulled my way through in my own determination to achieve my goal, and I ended up bringing stress on myself and everyone else around me.

If we will simply learn to listen to God and do what He says, we will discover that things will go well for us. No matter what the situation, we need to listen to God and obey His voice. Proverbs 3:6 states: In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths. You may not understand the reasons for God asking you to do certain things, but as you listen to His voice and obey His direction, you can experience a peaceful calmness as your stress level begins to decrease. So listen up...and de-stress!

Have you studied depression from a medical point of view? I don't want to start giving you information if you already have it. Do you understand the modern medical viewpoint that some forms of depression are not situational, but are caused by imbalances in chemicals created by the body?

This is true, there are chemical situations, but the chemically induced depression itself can bring on more depression. Any physical or mental illness can lead to depression if we don't look at it with the proper perspective, compounding the issue. I know of a man who had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and the meds they put him on caused side affects that caused retinal detatchment. This definitely caused more depression, so anytime we can seek a non drug answer to a problem it is best. Today medical and psychological profession have come to the point of using drugs to treat everything. This isn't hard to understand, if you believe that man's existence is random and not by design, and that there is no God or a spiritual side of man, than you will try to explain all his ills on biological causes. Sometimes they are right, sometimes they are way off, so a Christian should be careful where they are getting counseling from.

*nod* You've got some good points, and I don't disagree with you. I'm also all for seeking non-drug solutions to depression in particular, since it can often be improved by changes in attitude, behaviour and diet. BUT just as I think it's unwise to assume a biological cause for all cases of depression, I think it's unwise - perhaps more unwise - to assume a spiritual cause for all cases of depression. For some, this is the case. For others, it's more a 'thorn in the flesh' that God refuses to remove, for His own reasons. And for still others, the right medication or other biological treatment can greatly alleviate the problem.

I don't know much about dengue fever, but from what I understand you are probably experiencing a chemical imbalance (I could be completely wrong on this one). I don't think that therapy can help much on this. And I am not aware of any fast acting anti-depressants.

What I would suggest is that you try to eat something at least and try to maintain yourself. If you don't want anti-depressants there are supplements you may try but don't expect much as they usually work in mild cases and take even longer than anti-depressants to act.

From my own experience SSRIs (which are usually used in depression) can work (you need to give them a couple of weeks tho) and have good results while the side effects are minimal. There is also no fear of addiction so don't worry you will not become a drug addict.

Regardless take one day at a time, try to do something you enjoy, exercise can help (IF you can get out of bed), small steps are the key. You will be fine just be patient.

One thing that helps in any case that I feel must be stressed is a complete reliance on God. regardless of whether or not it is chemical or emotional, it is necessary to be in communication with God through His word to make sure we don't become dependent on drugs or anything outside of Him. When I say dependent, I don't necessarily mean addicted, but simply that we can get to a point where we feel that God has nothing to do with all of the anwers to lifes problems.

I have met people who started depending on their therapists or psychologist so much so that they have begun to reject the Word as a final source of truth. My sister joined AA and got involved with some people that led her into some "pop" psychology that led her to blame all of her problems on everyone else, then she rejected the Bible and her faith. Now she won't have anything to do with discussions that even have a hint of religion. I partly blame this on some of our home life, but it does not help when the psychological world comes to a person and gives them a lot of technical jargon and labels that get a person to believe that they are, OCD, co-dependent, bi polar, etc. These may be valid medical conditions, but they are not who we are if we are in Christ. I can be a child of God who has a bi polar condition, but I am not bi polar. what this thinking does is get us to focus on our identity, if I am an alcoholic than my natural response is to drink, if I am a child of God, my natural response is to depend on God for meaning and purpose, rather than a bottle.

I speak from experience on this, I dealt with alcohol dependency for some time, truth about my identity was crucial to getting away from dependency on it. Being able to depend on God also means we have to see Him as dependable, this requires faith and clear view of who He is in light of Scripture. He proven to be magnificently loving to me in light of how He has forgiven me, accepted me unconditonally, made me completely righteous, and given me a never ending source of strength found in Him living moment by moment.

I just did a google on dengue fever depresson, said it's transmited from mesquitos, is that correct.
About eating, what did your doctor say? I recently went through a time of lack of hunger, and lost 40lbs,I had to gradually start eating again, starting with small meals that are easy to digest, I know it's tough to eat when you don't feel like it, but the food will help you recover, I'm back to eating 2 meals a day, but I also have snacks through out the day to add some calories and sugar,
hope that's helpful info.

God bless

Curly Blue,

I am so sorry to hear you are going through such a stressful time. I have never heard of post dengue fever depression before, but from your explanation of it, it sounds horrible. You have the typical symptons of depression, the same I've had. I want you to know that I was put on anti-depressant that's that generic for Prozac (Flouxitine) . It caused me to lose about 7lbs. I lost my appetite completely. If your doctors are leaning towards putting you on an anti-d, please make sure loss of appetite is not one of the side effects, as it will make your situation worse.

In my prayers,
Bobbie

Dear CurlyBlue,

I know you don't want to eat but it isn't going to help you if you don't eat. Your body needs to be nourished!!! If you have to start taking medicine, it isn't really isn't that bad. Just watch out for the side effects. I am sorry that you haven't been feeling well lately (stress can feel enhanced with depression) but just remember that God is there for you and He will provide you with what you need according to His will. Thanks everyone, you have been very supportive. I am trying to eat more, but I am still losing weight.
Daryl, yes dengue fever is transmitted by mosquitos. I live in Indonesia at the moment, and it is quite common here. My doctor said if I dont stabilise my weight she definitely wants me to go on anti deprssants.
