• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey everyone. I am quite depressed today. I got up around noon and I was just pretty depressed. I guess I have been having a lot of doubts about my spiritual life and stuff. Like I am currently on the path of conversion to Catholicism and I guess I may be having doubts about that. I'm not really looking for any advice spiritually but more or less just for practical advice and/or prayers. Another part of it is that I have forgotten to take my medicine in the past couple of days. Thanks all for any advice or prayers you can give.

Holly can I ask what type of medicine you are taking? When my husband was gone in Saudi Arabia I took Paxil for my nerves not realizing it was for depression and when I came off of it, it gave me suicidal thoughts and I am not that kind of a person, so it could be side effects of the medication. Have you done any research on the medicine to see what people have said about it or what kinds of side effects?
Secondly, we all have down days once in a while, mine are usually when I am PMSing...I call it my male hating days although I don't hate anyone, I just get grumpy and want to be alone during that time. It could be a number of things adding up to make you feel down...just a thought, I hope it helps and I'll keep ya in my prayers sweetie.

Yes, I have done some research on my medicine and it would normally keep me from being depressed as it is an anti-depressant. I take Lexapro. Anyway, there are other things bothering me besides what I mentioned but I'd rather leave that unmentioned. Thanks for your support. :)

I am coptic orthodox , I wanted to say consider that but I see u have considered eastern orthodox from your profile... but u can still be saved in the protestant church I think.. depends which church.. which is more close to the original church the orthodox church... like to be saved... u need full water immersion baptism, Faith , Sacraments (Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. (KJV) John 6:54 , works which prove your faith)

But still getting in the right church wont mean you wont have to battle depression in all cases.. it might of been given by God for you good... but for me I believe the prayer, reading the bible and taking the body and blood of our LORD has helped me alot in giving me joy.. . but Im not completely healed still.. I dont function well.. though I may look the most happiest sometimes. But before I wasnt even able to smile at all.

I suffer from depression quite a bit too...question: for what reasons do you think that God would give a person depression for their good? I had not thought of that before...I'd just like you to explain that a little more to me if you can.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, mindyerwin1, I have suffered from depression for
about the last 4, to 5, yrs, and i've been a christian, for
the last 20yrs. During this time, i can't remember ever
thinking God caused it. I used to be very active in my church. I was a deacon for 6yrs., music leader for 5yrs.
and sang in a contemporary christian trio, for 15yrs.
The way i am now, i don't do anything, because of the depression and anxiety. I guess my question would be:
Why would God cause an affliction, that would disable my service to His church? I don't think He did. For what
it's worth, i believe that we all live in a world, that is full of, suffering, disasters, sickness, etc, etc. I f we believe Gods' word that, when adam and eve broke Gods'
command to not eat from the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge, of good and evil, in the middle of the garden, man brought all these condemnations upon himself. In fact, God warned adam what would happen if he did. I also believe(for what it's worth), that God can use these things such as, depression, etc. to bring ,glory
to Himself by, healing, strengthening, and bestowing blessings, and mercy upon the individual, should we be faithful during the process. Do i think God caused my depression and anxiety? No, i don't. Why has it lasted so
long? I'm not sure i could say. I can say that i have not
been as faithful to God, as i probably could have. In closing, Gods' word says: He will have mercy, on whom
He will have mercy. If i don't receive mercy, then maybe He'll at least strengthen me for the journey,
but in no way, should we cease praying for that healing.
I hope i helped a little, and did'nt hinder you.
God Bless, and Take Care, Amin.(short for A-Minor)

Lifelong sufferer here. (My particular problem is manic depression, aka bipolar disorder.) AD's are particularly a problem for me. I take Lamictal 200 mg daily, and Lexapro, 10 mg daily (although I'm trying to get back down to 5 mg daily...I suspect the AD is giving me hypomania again, like they always do.)

Those who stated in above posts that "God is giving us (or anyone) depression/illness/anything like that" are wrong. No, God doesn't GIVE us these afflictions-- He ALLOWS them in our lives sometimes, and for HIS purposes. We may not always know WHAT those purposes are, but He will guide us through it.

Today I am in a bad place, after more than a week of "normalcy". I need to go take a nap, now. I can't really do much else. but I do sympathize with those who are suffering from mental illnesses, and the best we can all do is Trust the Lord, and Pray for One Another.

Sometimes I wonder, what is my problem. :sigh:

 Hi, Evie, It's kinda hard to say what causes depression for someone inparticular. My situation, may be different,
it depends on how one was raised, what they may have had to go thru, genetics. It could be a number of things.
The only way to really tell is to see someone who is a trained professional, that knows , what to, and what not to look for. Just remember, depression is an illness,or disease, just like any other medical problem, and should be thought of in that way. when we don't feel good, we see a doctor, it's the same with depression.
Hope i helped a little, God Bless You, Amin.

I think God has not healed my depression totally so that I can deal with my pride and stubbornness. In the midst of my depression, I only left with my weak mind that can only depend on God's grace and provision alone. My pride and stubbornness will intensify my depression. And I am learning to let go of my pride, and replace it with a humble heart. I believe when I get rid of my pride, God will heal my depression more or less completely.

Depression also make a person more mature, more stronger and more persever. I believe it will come out as refined silver after going through depression.

When I first suffered from depression I thought I couldn't be free, but I believe it depends on your will to live....you can determine for yourself how you want to live through Christ....He has given me the strength to hand things over to him when I am weak and to let go, too often our struggle is because we don't truly let go of our problem, we hang on to it by a thread or take it back after we give it to God, then we worry over it after we already asked God to take care of it. He can't heal or take care of something if we don't truly give it to him and let it go.
