• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hello Everyone -- Been gone a while. I have been too depressed -- SUICIDAL ALL WEEKEND. Over the weekend I stumbled onto a 12-step group for depressives like ourselves. It has given me more hope than I have had in years -- a tool for management. The website is http://www.depressedanon.com/. There are workbooks there that you can order and tons and tons of testimonies that really gave me hope. Then there is a Group of DA'ers at Yahoo. The group is VERY active and the members really encourage and support one another A LOT. There are obviously many Christians in that group. This is a bunch of people actually using proven tools to do something about their depression -- using the 12 steps and the other tools in the workbooks. I know I need to do the work -- but I have never really figured out what that consists of!! Just think -- A workbook to help you work the 12 steps to beat our depression!!! Check it out!

Oh and Laurel -- I have been praying for that person you requested prayer for ALL DAY!

For anyone who is interested, I ordered the books from Depressed Anonymous and I have been VERY satisfied with the information. The workbook is awesome -- it actually walks you through the 12 steps and has you write about them.

The only thing -- the guy who started DA 20 years ago does not believe that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance -- he thinks we depress ourselves and that we become saddicts. When I read this -- I almost bolted. So, I wrote about my fears and the ensuing anger at that statement at the Yahoo site where they are online. Everyone there believes it can be caused physiologically. There was a great discussion after that. Most people there are on meds and have been helped by them AND DA. Like one lady said -- we must have a toolbox full of tools we can use -- meds, DA, family - etc.

Bottom line -- it doesn't matter how we got depressed -- all we know is that we are. DA is one of the tools we can use to get out of the prison of depression and begin to learn new tools to cope with it -- and maybe even banish it!!! I do know that depressive thoughts become a habit and DA is giving me the tools to actually learn new behaviors and thoughts.

I strongly recommend this program! The online group is GREAT! I love it! I'm also going to be involved in starting a face-to-face group here in Seattle. Finally --- hope!

Blessings!

Hi Karen,

Sorry... I haven't checked this thread in a REALLY LONG TIME. I'm happy to hear that you have found an avenue to work on some of your issues with depression. I'm also sorry to hear that you were experiencing suicidal feelings. I know the fear and uncertainty that episodes like that can create. I will keep you in prayer even though it is after the fact.

Thank you for praying for my friend.

I posted this on the caregivers site. I once had bi-polar amongst other severe mental illnesses. Jesus has cured me of them all since I turned them over to him. All I want to do is help with advice. I never thought it would happen but Jesus power and faithfulness is so strong. I wrote this to someone whos sister had bi-polar disease.

I would recommend the Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Meyer. Her son suffered from mental illness and she wrote a book on the different conditions of the mind. It shows you how to overcome a wandering mind, a doubtful mind, a confused mind, a reasoning mind and so on. It also shows us how to overcome it with faith in Jesus and the truth of scripture. John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth and the truth will set you free. Now that I have been free from the stronghold's of mental illness through Jesus I feel it my duty to give back and help anyone I can. I have been off medication for 8 months now. Turn it over to Jesus for he is the best Psychologist ever.

I was just delivered from Paranoid schizophrenia, bi-polar, depression, mood swings, personality disorder and severe anxiety attacks. Severe mental illness is a generational curse in my moms side of the family and other members of the family have been in and out of state hopitals their whole life. After a three year battle with it as a Christian I turned it over to Jesus and let him heal my broken heart. He is the only way to overcome mental illness. Medication helps to cope but it doesn't usually solve the problem. Plus a lot of people with mental illness stop taking medication when they start doing good and the balances of the drugs in their system get out of wack. It is a hard thing to do on your own but with the Love and Strength of Christ Jesus he can deliver anyone from anything. We just have to trust him and haave faith. It doesn't happen over night and there will be days when you want to give up but you have to perservere and think about the eternal rewards we will have in heaven.

Romans 12 is a great chapter that focuses on sacrificing your body to be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Jesus can retrain your mind to have righteous thoughts. All medication does is block certain thought patterns plus there are side effects to the drugs. Once someone gets off drugs they usually go through withdraws and fall and sink into deeper depression. Verse 9-13 talks about Love and this is what Jesus is all about. I would encourage you to try and get her to attend church where their are people with genuine concerns for others and also to seek out a Christian therapist.

Your sister is probable depressed because she remembers all the good times she had when she was messed up on drugs. I know pot used to make me so happy and it was the only time I felt good about myself. When I would come down I would get so paranoid and would spaz out. This is where your mental illness really grows. People start to crave the drug and the excitement that goes along with it. The drugs give them an emotional high and a release from there daily struggles. It is a time to relax and not worry about anything but the total bliss or state of mind they are in.

The only problem is when people are in these states of mind they tend to fantasize about being someone else and then when they come off the effect of the drug they are back to themselves and they get depressed. If people are tripping and have a bad trip these thoughts get imbedded in their minds and recurring thought patterns will remember them of these things and the reality of there daily life which they might not be enjoying will conflict with these thoughts. I myself was often in another state of mind all the time and lived the majority of the past 10 years in my own world.

I know I got off the subject a little but with bi-polar you crave the highs and you fear the lows. Drugs and alcohol might be things that she craves and they result in her having highs when she is on these things. When she is on a low all she can think about is how much she craves that cigarette or how high she could be right now. So when people are in a low state of mind they crave that high and will do anything to get there. It is a very serious disorder and it can ruin someone when they lash out at work, school, or to their friends. It can ruin alot of relationships which will push them further into depression and make it harder to recover. When people have tramatic things happen and they can't let go your thought processes go into a shuffle mode and it is hard to pick out the right thoughts for the current situation they are in. This is when people with bi-Polar lash out or just start crying. Their minds are under so much stress and coping in this world becomes a harder struggle everyday.

I can't tell anyone to come to salvation but Jesus is the only way for total deliverance from the oppresion of this disease. It is a hard thing to overcome but Jesus knows how to fix the problem. The best part is salvation is free and his love is neverending. I hope my insight can help you out and feel free to ask other questions.

Hi! Do you think that Jesus will deliver ever bipolar sufferer from their illness? I have been diagnosed with bi-polar/schizo effective disorder been through four major psychosises and have suffered enormously dark and oppressive downs. The point is that for the last ten years I have sought Jesus to heal me from my illness. (I became utterly overreligious and started reading the Bible compulsively) Instead of healing more times of illness came my way. Leaving me utterly confused as to why Jesus would not heal me. Do you think that Jesus wants something from me first -- like must I change myself before He will heal me or is such healing through faith in His power alone? Not that I doubt your claim of healing but rather that Jesus would heal me. I'm taking medication now and this has reduced my high times dramatically however I'm down most of the time now and unable to get up and going. Very intrested to hear what your perspective is.
