In talking about the depiction of Jesus, I find it funny that in all pictures he looks like a hippie. Now dont take offense to that statement let me finish. In reality Jesus, more than likely, was NOT white, being in the where he was skin tone is very vital to life. The darker the skin the more water can be retained. The reason he looks like a "hippie" is because the 1st drawings of Christ were during the Renasances,sp?, and that was just how they used to depict people then.

My tangent is over now, sorry for the rant, I was just reading and had to say something.

Icons are much, much earlier than the Renassance (I can't spell it either :D ). Check this one one out:
