Greetings in Christ,

I've come to this forum seeking help with some serious family troubles and need advice from my brothers and sisters in Christ. I believe that my younger brother has become possessed by the spirit of the recently deceased journalist Dr. Hunter S. Thompson and has cut off all communication with his family. I need help from strong Christians who are understand the nature of the spirit world and are going to take my story seriously. I come from a liberal church and nobody in my congregation is taking my family seriously- my pastor and others whom we have confided in are all convinced that my brother is schizophrenic. I am looking to get into contact with Christians who have experience with demonic possessions and know where my family can turn to get help for my brother.

I had always considered myself a "moderate" Christian (I accept evolution, big bang, old earth, etc.) I do not take the entire Bible literally (don't believe in the Great Flood, etc.) The church I attend is very progressive; we support gay rights, womens right to choose, etc. The majority of our congregation is made up of free thinkers, scientists, artists, etc. Demonic possession is something I have never believed in. This very disturbing event has forced me to change my views.

Two weeks ago, my older sister (Sondra) called me up, extremely distraught, telling me that our younger brother (Paul) had become possessed by a demonic spirit. She explained that she had not seen or heard from him in over two months (the two of them are very close and speak often) he was not answering her e-mails or phone calls. The day before, she had driven from her home in Tucson to his apartment in LA- he was not home so she waited for him in the parking lot for almost ten hours. When Paul finally showed up at 4AM, Sondra barely recognized him by his appearance. Paul was intoxicated, smoking a cigarette and carrying a bottle of bourbon in his hand- he was extremely paranoid, mumbling about Hubert Humphrey and Ed Muskie and had absolutely no idea who Sondra was.

As she began to describe the incident to me, I immediately concluded that Paul had succumbed to some sort of serious mental illness, like schizophrenia; signs of delusion (believed he was living in the year 1972) paranoia (kept asking Sondra if "one of Nixon's henchmen" had sent her...) but the more she went into detail, the more skeptical I became. I am now convinced that my brother is possessed.

Growing up, I was the wild kid of the bunch. Paul and Sondra both committed their lives to Christ in elementary school and neither one experienced "backsliding." Both my siblings were model Christian kids. While I was smoking marijuana, going to concerts and having sex in college, Paul was volunteering at the Salvation Army and working with Campus Crusaders. My little brother was the biggest goody goody you could ever meet- I never once heard him curse, never saw him smoke a cigarette; he didn't even have a drink on his 21st birthday!

So when Sondra went on to describe the conditions of Paul's apartment and the nature of the conversation she had with him that night, I began to think "this makes absolutely no sense! There is no naturalistic explanation for what is happening here!"

Here are the facts that convince me that my brother is possessed by the late Dr. Thompson:

- During Paul's conversation with Sondra, he was recalling a "disturbing conversation" he had just had with a "confidential informant" who told him that he had hard evidence that the Dolphins purposely lost the Super Bowl to the Cowboys and that "the Soviets were possibly involved." My brother hates football! He had no idea who played in this years Super Bowl, how would he know that Miami had plated Dallas in '72??? How was he able to recall, in detail, key plays in the game and that Ella Fitzgerald had performed at half time? He also told Sondra that he was still angry with Jan Werner (the publisher of Rolling Stone magazine) for cutting off his expense account (I looked into this and confirmed that Rolling Stone had indeed cut off Thompson's credit card during his coverage of the 1972 Super Bowl.)

- Paul has never read any of Thompson's books, probably never even heard of the man in the first place. So, even if this was a case of mental illness, how would he be able to recall so many details from Thompson's past? How would he be aware of so many of the man's idiosyncrasies? I spoke with Paul over the phone three days ago (in order to have a conversation with him, I had to tell him I was a student at UC Berkley, that I was a great admirer of his work and was doing a story on him for the school's newspaper.) His voice is unrecognizable as my brother; he mumbles in the same rhythm as Thompson, uses words like "swine" and "atavistic," and

-The last time I saw him he was working in a hospital billing office, volunteering part time with the youth ministry at his church. He has since quit his job, vacated his apartment and moved into a hotel in Hollywood. Has been drinking, taking LSD and hanging around with an outlaw motorcycle club! He told me that he was upset over the lack of success of his book "Hell's Angels" and had been riding with the Mongols working on a sequel.

I feel trapped and hopeless! I don't even know where to begin! Sondra understands much more about the Lord and the nature of the spirit world than myself, she has said that she believes that the only way to heal Paul is for the spirit to be cast out by someone whom God has gifted with the power to call out deamons. How would we even go about doing this???

Has anyone here had a similar experience? Or know of people who we could be put into contact with who would be able to help?

Also, something which has got me very confused; Thompson died in 2005, yet Paul believes it is the year 1972. Does anybody know what the explanation for this would be? There are many things we do not understand about the spirit world, but I would think that a spirit would remember it's entire life and not just up until a certain point.

Prayers and input greatly appreciate! God bless!

In Christ,
-Eugene

well first off you can't just believe half the bible and things that don't seem progressive to you or right for today, you either believe it all or you don't, demon possession is very real, Jesus speaks about it in the New Testament he even rebuked demons in the bible, I'd say pray for him but first I'd say you need to get some stuff right with what you believe first, you support alot of things God hates and liveing like that your not gonna be close to him and by not being close to him not have any power to help him except to pray that God helps him you probably don't want to hear me but the whole bibles truth not part. He even warns that if hes demon possed and doesn't execpt Jesus and be filled with the Holy Spirit after hes freed it will be seven times worse.

Demons were originally created by God, before they fell. Through the Holy Spirit, we have God inside of us, and if we ask him to, he can give us the power to do amazing things. Since we have God in us, and he created the demons, as long as we have faith in Christ, and believe in Him and His power, we can cast out demons in His name.

However, if your brother was as close to God as he sounds, a demon shouldn't be able to possess him short of the things in the post after this one. Don't rule out mental illness or drugs. And don't assume that he couldn't have been reading up on Dr. Thompson.

It can't be "the spirit of the recently deceased journalist Dr. Hunter S. Thompson" and a demon at the same time.

I'd say, drive a wooden stake through his heart and soak him down really good with Holy Water or see if you can get him to see a psychiatrist . . . . whichever sounds more appealing.

It appears that your post is genuine, and although I am not in any way an expert on this subject, I have read what the Bible says and hopefully may be able to offer a little insight.

Demonic possession is Biblical. Spirits of actual dead people, however, do not possess the living. Demons may be able to mimic the deceased. From what you wrote, it is not clear whether your brother is demonized; or he has developed a mental illness; or his situation is a form of drug induced psychosis.

How old is your brother, and has he had a recent traumatic event, such as loss of a loved one, loss of a job, or loss of serious relationship?

Praying for you.

Tenacious and Thankful;

Thank you for being the only people on here (so far) to take me seriously. This crisis has been devastating to my family (especially my mother who is battling cancer) and I do not appreciate those of you who are making a joke out of this horrible situation. SHAME ON YOU!!!

Tenacious: From what I read in the gospels, it is true that believers can call out spirits in the name of Christ. But I have never met anyone who has claimed to have successfully accomplished this task. This is why I am on here inquiring as to how I could go about connecting with somebody who has this spiritual gift. My brother has amazing faith in the Lord. He has devoted his life to serving Jesus and as I had written before, the drugs and alcohol did not precede the possession but began afterward. Paul had never even smoked a cigarette before last month!!!

Thankful: Paul will be 27 next month. Aside from mother's diagnosis of breast cancer last August, there have been no upsetting or traumatic events in Paul's life that I am aware of. If you go back and read my post carefully, you will see that drugs and mental illness can be ruled out absolutely. Possession is the only possible explanation for what has happened to my brother. I just need to know what we can do to help him.

I appreciate both of your responses.

Don't rule out mental illness or drugs. And don't assume that he couldn't have been reading up on Dr. Thompson.

As I said before, mental illness was my first inclination, but the nature of Paul's behavior has clearly demonstrated that this cannot be the case.

Even if Paul had been introduced to Dr. Thompson's writing within the past two months, he would have had to have spent every waking moment studying not only his work, but reading about his personal life and observing his speech and mannerisms from videos and audio recordings. Even if this were the case, not only do I seriously doubt that he could have learned all that he has learned about Dr. Thompson in this short amount of time, but there is no reason why he would be doing so in the first place. My brother is one of the most pious, conservative people you will ever meet. He doesn't even watch TV, or read anything that does not pertain to the faith. This is why I have ruled out psychosis and am convinced that possession is the cause of his behavior.

Based on everything you have posted, I would prayerfully recommend that you have your brother evaluated for a brain tumor or some other brain injury/disease. I am talking about physiological disease, not mental. Christians of the caliber of your brother are not suddenly possessed by a demon for no reason at all. The indwelling Holy Spirit has dominion in the life of a dedicated Christian. We can allow the enemy to have access and strongholds by making sinful choices, but out and out possession would be unlikely unless he decided to reject Christ and turn himself over to a reprobate mind, which does not sound like the case with your brother.

God bless you, Eugene.

Unless you are a mental health professional, you are not qualified to rule out mental illness.

Your paragraph:

gave the impression that you aren't serious. It appears however, that you are serious. That said, human spirits can't posess other humans . . . demons can, we are entirely different kinds of creatures. The behavior does not sound like demon posession. It sounds to me like a little OCD & a little Schizo-affective mixed in to an unhappy blend. Seriously, get him to a doc. You can check with his local hospital's mental health unit, about getting him in for a 72 hour eval, if you have reason to believe he may be a threat to himself or others.

Sorry about your mother's illness.

Grace, I got your PM but was not able to respond, says I do not have enough posts to reply. Thank you for your advice. Could you please elaborate on why the Deliverance Ministry is a bad option? I am not familiar with them. I have been trying to find a Pentecostal church in LA. From what I understand, God has given this church special gifts (tongues, etc) and it seems like they may be the best equipped to help Paul.

Brain damage or mental illness would have been my first guess... that could explain why he has suddenly taken on a new personality. But it does not explain how he remembers all these details from the past, or how a young man who used to wear a shirt and tie to work everyday suddenly has been able to hang around and be accepted by an outlaw motorcycle gang.

Getting him to see a brain specialist would be extremely difficult- he is paranoid beyond belief and believes that Richard Nixon has it in for him. Not to mention that he has no idea that I am his brother.

Mostly unless & until a person Invites & allows any spirit in, an evil spirit can not take control.

(Both your beliefs & conclusions aside, Instead of 'playing' doc ^_^),
find out
how to get your mother, brother, & rest of family some competent  & experienced help.

Praying for you all! :)

Dear Eugene,

I didn't intend to imply that deliverance ministry is not a viable option--just to be wise in choosing a ministry and I could not recommend one, personally. Also, as several of us have posted, it is not likely that a Christian would be possessed. Hopefully, someone else will read your posts who can advise you in this area.

I can only imagine how difficult this must be for you and your family. Again, I encourage you to rule out physical and psychological causes before you conclude that he is suffering from possession.

You truly do need more help than laymen can give you.

Prayers and blessings for you and your family,

tfg

P.S. I am also including prayers for your mother.

Just ask God mate, you can read Nahum now to find out who He is and who these 'demons' are and only get to know the One you trust.

Hi Eugene. I know that you don't think your brothers problem is mental illness, but I would advise you to get professional help. I know this will be difficult because your brother doesn't even know who you are anymore, but what do you have to lose? He doesn't know you as a brother, and he doesn't have the same relationship he used to have with you, so at this point he is a stranger to you... or atleast you're a stranger to him. So I would ask that you get him professional help, even if you have to trick him into it. Aside from that, God can help your brother greatly... all you need his faith. Continue to pray for your brother... get your church to pray for him... and be persistent; don't be discouraged if God does not answer your prayers right away. Knock at His door constantly. Also, like I mentioned before, it's clear you don't believe it's a mental illness... that it wouldn't make sense for it to be a mental illness... but a lot of things in this world make don't make sense. Anyways, continue to pray.

I agree with some of the previous posts, your brother needs to be evaluated by a mental health professional. I'm not a mental health provider but it really sounds like your brother has Schizophrenia. Have you heard of PsychWeek on the Discovery Health channel? You should watch it. Most of the patients on there are Schizophrenic. I just finished watching the lady with 15 different personalities.

Your brother doesn't have to know anything about the author you were talking about. Schizo's, for some reason, develop personalities that their "normal" personality knows nothing about. So, I wouldn't rule out a mental health disorder.

I'll be praying for you and your family!
