Ugh that's stupid, CF deleted my post. I was going to write a long spiel but now I can't be bothered to do it again.

Basically I believe that a God could have created the universe but does not intervene in the lives of anyone or any process in the universe. It has been set into motion and will continue to work on its own. I do not believe in revealed religion or central moral authority and as far as I can tell, there is no afterlife to speak of. Deism as a whole encourages the use of God-given reason to solve the problems of the world that we encounter.

Past that, everyone believes different things. Most Deists can be divided into Classical and Modern categories. I'm more Classical but I don't think that distinction is that important. Deists aren't bound by the strict dogma of religions like Christianity or Islam.

I believe that God exists, but I don't assign many attributes to God, because I am not capable of understanding God. I do believe God created the universe, and had His hands in the design of nature, whether by evolution or special creation.

Does God intervene in ones life? I don't know.

Is there an afterlife? I don't know, but I would hope so.

I firmly believe God is somewhere out there, and hopefully one day I would be able to meet Him.

I believe in God ( have called myself Christian on again off again for years) What I have a LOT of trouble believing is the personal relationship aspect and the difference that makes. I actually have a thread I started today in Exploring Christianity about this very subject.

I had a lot of trouble believing that part too.

I asked myself why isn't God helping all the Palestinian children that are being blown up in warfare, but helping me with something way less important?

I'm going to check out your thread!

This is my biggest hangup with Christianity and any other religion; I have no problem accepting the idea of God, I struggle with the idea that God is personal and has oddly specific ideals and laws specified in documented religions.

I used to identify as a deist when I ceased to be Christian, yet still retained my faith in a "classical", albeit unnamed deity.

But the more I thought about and meditated upon it, the less sense classical notions of divinity made to me. I started to realize just how anthropomorphic the very concept tended to be, and physical appearances were the least part of that. Almost any time somebody talks about "God", they are essentially picturing a human being in terms of thought processes, motivations, emotions, goals... well, just about anything.

To me, this is a strong indicator that we, as a species, are merely projecting here.
It's as if a race of sapient ants started to talk about the Hive Queen of Heaven, whose eggs illuminate the night sky, and whose hive constitutes the firmament.

Deism almost kinda sounds like agnosticism in a simplistic way. I am sure there is a lot more to deism then that, but on the surface it sounds similar. At the least the way it sounds when explained on this thread.

HUH? Agnostics don;t know whether there's a God or not. Deists believe there is one but don't think some random bloke or book written by random blokes past have the monopoly on knowledge or access to that god.

You and I share a similar belief.

I believe in God. I do not believe in the "Infinite Monkey Theorem". The Universe is far too complex to have happened at random.

I'd like to think that He plays a part in our lives. I feel as though He has played a part in mine though I cannot prove it.

Interesting.

Deists also have the coolest symbol here!
