  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The US isn't the only country in the world you know. ;) :p :p (adding smilies so you know that while I am taking the mick I do so in a light hearted way)

It isn't?????

I'm confused, Athene. What are some "other" countries in the world -- and if they actually are independent countries, what must the U.S. do to acquire them?

[just kidding!!!]

Seriously, Athene: what towns might be considered "dinky" (in the Sheffield, TX sense of the word -- sans prickly pear cactus and mesquite trees, of course!) in Great Britain?

Hell is puberty. The after effects are plenty fun but puberty itself is not, especially when you have to deal with other people, especially when most of them are also going through puberty. Also when you have a problem, most people only say "Oh, I'm sorry," or "Oh, try praying" (as if that hasn't already been done), or they throw the cliche or afterschool-special advice (there's plenty of other fish in the sea, better to have loved then lost than to have never loved at all, a smile is a frown upside down, there's always a silver lining, etc). Usually good advice hurts and people don't have the balls do give it. Sorry about the rant.

Are you mocking me or the words and teachings of Jesus in the New Testament ?

There is a difference between mocking Jesus and mocking a literal interpretation of what could very well be metaphorical. The burning of hell is the warmth of God's love when we have no physical body to distract us from the realization we don't deserve it, it's not a physical flame. The worms are the thoughts that tear down the shallow and artificial self-worth we have constructed as false identities instead of realizing our true potential as images of God. Then there's the second death, where we realize we weren't truely alive to begin with. That is hell, and although the place in Christ's time where all the locals burned thier garbage is an extremely apt metaphor, it is not a geographical description because psyche isn't hyle.

The last would be pronounced "Bow-lu" in the part of the south I live in, as long as it was a local street or town (we've got lots of folks descended from Huguenots here). Since there aren't any Beaulieues in the immediate area (that I'm aware of), I'd probably get funny looks for trying to get the locals to pronounce the name.

The only thing I can think that might be slightly worse than that is going through puberty while realizing that one is gay; and realizing that the guys we have incredible crushes on are actually attracted to girls and that we simply cannot relate to being physically attracted to the opposite sex AND knowing that there are plenty of straight guys who are going through puberty who are going to beat the snot out of us if they realize we're attracted to them.

The only good things I have to say about puberty is that it lasted only a year, and I did manage to find a support network (even in 1967!), and I came out as a sophomore in high school in 1970 (and I've never looked back).

My gut instinct would have been to pronounce it "Bowl-you."

I'm not fond of Louisiana for the most part, but I really like the Cajun parts of the state: the Cajuns and the Huguenot-descended people are some of the friendliest and most down-to-earth people one will find.

My heart still breaks for the people down around Buras, Boothville and Venice for when the eyewall and storm surges of category five hurricanes Camille (200 mph winds) and Katrina (175 mph winds) came through: both hurricanes brought 30 foot storm surges AND 40-foot waves on top of those storm surges. If you see the water tower at Boothville, remember that it was completely covered with water with 40 foot waves on top of that.

Coming out around that time wouldn't of been too bad, would it? Since the whole counter-culture and such.

I'm from SC and have never been to Leesiana.

I had considered leaving an I in between the L and U, producing a sound to your pronunciation, but here lieu ("in lieu of") ends up pronounced as "lu" unless someone is reading it. I'd say there is no southern accent, there's a southern dialect with various accents.

Nooooooo.... There are parts of the south that haven't progressed much beyond the '50s. It'd be a brave move coming out where I live and I live in one of the most metropolitan southern cities (we even have a really big wikipedia article).

Actually, it was pretty awful. Southern Indiana is really conservative, and I made the mistake of thinking that since the Christopher Street riot occurred the previous summer and Gay Liberation was now going, it was perfectly all right to declare myself.

However, I made the "big announcement" in one of my classes, simply by standing up and making "the announcement". They still talked about it when my partner and I went back for my 30th class reunion.

But as for counterculture: I was involved in the Moratorium Against the Vietnam War (where we war black arm bands and discussed the war in all of our classes and what we could do to stop the war, including nonviolent resistance); very active in my high school chapter of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS); helped organize a successful school boycott; and helped organize our school chapter of Lambda (for gay and lesbian students) —
which really wasn't bad for a 16-year-old.

My point is that they're pretty hostile for people like me.:(

I'll be out of this ruddy forest soon, though! But it will never be soon enough!:p

By this logic, why not just make fun of everyone's misfortunes ?
i don't laugh at misfortunes...but i laugh at people's stupidity/bad choices...or the idea of a God sending his "precious" creation to hell.

and to answer your question... I seriously doubt that I would ever walk through the gates of heaven if I had the mindset of one who spent his life lauphing at his family members who were burning and rotting in hell.

That is not love.
that's not what i meant. what i meant is, is i'm predicting that the last thing your going to worry about when you enter heaven is your family and friends rotting away in hell (if you personally believe or "know" they are) so i'm the type of person that deals with things that bother by making comedy out of it. because your going to be seeing everything about God, Jesus, the saints, whatever heaven looks like. the so called love will be non-existant at the sight of "God". it's just a temporary love.
