1 Chronicles 17:9 I have chosen a place for my people Israel and have settled them there, where they will live without being oppressed any more. Ever since they entered this land they have been attacked by violent people, but this will not happen again. I promise to defeat all your enemies and to give you descendants.

Can someone explain this to me? Is it saying that Israel would never be defeated again? If so, has this been fulfilled in the course of history?

thanks,
chris

I hope this verse will help you to understand further.

Deut
33:29 Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by
the LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy
excellency! and thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and
thou shalt tread upon their high places.

Here's my translation in KJV: 1Ch 17:9 Also I will ordain a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, and they shall dwell in their place, and shall be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more, as at the beginning,

Basically, the Lord will etablish them and they won't become servants of other nations or controled by others. I don't think this has happened yet...so I'm guessing it's a future prophecy.

Chris - do you use the South African English translation of the Bible that uses the Hebrew names and sometimes the Hebrew letters?

A friend found a copy of it in a book store and I keep meaning to order a copy myself but haven't yet. :)

Joshua 23: 11-14
Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your God. Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you: Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you. And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.

Israel failed to purge and sanctify their land.
Instead they sought to share what God has given them with an avowed enemy.
Israel is in snares and traps because she will not purge her land.
If she was to simply rely upon God and cleanse the land of those things that are of the enemy, God will bring that promised peace.

Wisdom's Child said:
Israel failed to purge and sanctify their land.
We fail to purge and sanctify our heart from the passions.
Instead they sought to share what God has given them with an avowed enemy.
Instead we seek to share what God has given us [body & soul] with the devil [i.e. by staining them with sins]
Israel is in snares and traps because she will not purge her land.
If she was to simply rely upon God and cleanse the land of those things that are of the enemy, God will bring that promised peace.
So it is with us, because of our spiritual negligence we are far from the promised peace and the inner meaning of scripture is far from us.

What i'm trying to ask is that to me on face value this passage looks like it says Israel will never be defeated again. Is there any specific event in history where Israel as a nation was defeated?

Or am i missing the true interpretation of this verse?

So 1 Chronicles 17:9 was more of a conditional promise of protection rather than a prophecy?
