Deep misconceptions about catholicism

"It's mostly Catholics that live around here. Speaking bluntly, of all the world religions (including Judaism and Islam) Catholicism is my LEAST favorite religion.

The reason is because I feel that they use their media and fame to put glory onto individuals and take glory away from God

Think about it: how often do we actually hear the Catholic church talk about God or Jesus? Never. It's almost always news about this pope or that cardinal. It takes the glory that should be going to Jesus Christ and it puts it into the hands of individuals.

I don't believe that people should be idolized. Because to me that's a form of idol worship, and .... I'm not sure if that's one of the ten commandments, but I do know that's a BIG NO NO to God.

Every single person who talks about the pope, all that whispered gossip, all the time spent like he's a celebrity--that's all time that should be given to God. So I strongly disagree with Catholics and their religion.

Not sure if I'm expressing this clearly, but what I mean is this: the goal of the church, first and foremost, is to act as a way to help connect with Jesus and God and to worship them, yes? But the catholic church doesn't do that as much as they should. They have the influence and power to reach millions of people, but they use that power to elevate themselves to celebrity status and keep secrets and do all these things that make you forget that, behind it all, they're supposed to be worshiping Jesus and not themselves.

As Lutherans we are critical of the Roman Catholic church because they are wrong on several very important points.

No one ever seems to agree with me when I bring it up, but I find the Catholic church to be very obvious in what it does wrong.

If the true point of Christianity is in the name (Christ) then why is it that the Catholic church focuses so much on its own famous members? They get so much media attention that makes them basically celebrities, and they use none of it to spread Jesus's words. It seems as if the most significant thing they promote is themselves.

I know that sounds a bit harsh, but it's just my observation. this whole thing with the pope retiring and the new pope being elected; how many times, through all this media coverage, was Jesus's name mentioned? I don't think I heard it mentioned once. All of this was directed towards making their religion seem like a reality TV shows, entertaining and not at all about Jesus and his love for the world.

So, I just don't understand the religion, really. At the end of the day (and this is just my opinion) I think their #1 job/goal is to spread the word of Christ. And I think that should come before everything else. But they are involved in so many scandals/secrets/controversies that most people think of the whole thing as a source of entertainment and it's easy to forget that it's supposed to be all about Jesus.

This is one of the reasons why I've taken such a huge interest in Lutheranism. I will state for the record that what attracts me most about Christianity is Christ. I'm not too happy about the OT (which is why I gave up on my Jewish faith very young), but I feel that, with Jesus, I could learn to appreciate it.

Lutherans seem to put the focus on Jesus more than any other sect of Christianity. I like the sheer amount of importance he plays as the central figure in the religion.

I can't think of any other sect or denomination that puts as much emphasis on Jesus as the Lutherans do.
The OT is always going to be a sore spot with me, I think. Because while I (thanks to your words) have come to accept that it is beyond my level of understanding to judge God's actions, they still make me very uncomfortable and sad.

I just really don't like all the killing in the OT."

Food for thought. We must be doing things wrong either that or the person who wrote this never heard an Angelus on Sunday...

For every one time I hear the name Jesus, I hear the name Mary 500 times more, and "pope" 100 times more. Every time I turn on EWTN out of curiousity, "Mary" ... "Our Lady" ... "Mother of God" ... "pope" ... "Mary" ... "Our Lady" ... "Mother of God" ... "oh yes, that Jesus guy" ... "pope" ... "Mary" ... "Our Lady" ... "pope"... "Mother of God" ... "pope"

You live down south, right? Hold on, let me get on a plane, fly to your home, and turn on EWTN assuming you have Dish or Direct or something. I'll even teach you how to use the buttons on the remote and the TV guide.

Mature response. All Christian like of you. You can't prove that all EWTN ever talks about is Mary you just wanna say it. Every time I've ever watched it in the past it was about the Saints, Jesus, Our Heavenly Father, something about reverence for the crucifix.

Prove that for every 100 times you hear Jesus you'll hear "Pope" 500 times.

I don't need to spend a lot of time watching the idiot box. I get my information about my faith from praying, reading, the Mass, the CCC, podcasts and oh yeah READING.

You don't need to worry about teaching me how to use a remote its not like using a remote takes some special skill that only people in the North are aware of. You say that like it takes some background, experience or education.

I'll fly up to your house, pull some books off your bookshelf and dust them off for you. Even teach you how to properly turn the pages. *shrug*

I watched EWTN on Thursday. Sr. Thomas Aquinas explained the sacrament of confirmation, and then there were meditations about Jesus carrying the cross and then later on His being taken down from the cross. Then there was an episode from Fr. Barron's Catholicism series - this one discussing angels and what heaven is like. Then there was an interview about a guy who lived like an Old Order Anabaptist for a while and everything he learned doing that. Then I stopped watching. Not too sinister.

You must be watching EWTN when the Rosary is being said.

However, the one thing that Pope Francis is doing is following in Jesus' footsteps and showing us how to do the same. Is that so wrong?

Look up the beginnings of your religion, I'm not talking Christianity, I'm talking Lutheranism. You guys name yourselves after a man, not a Godman, but a real man who lived at one time. I'm sure Martin Luther also talked about Mary, the Mother of God, too often for your tastes, too.

Listen to what the Pope says. He doesn't just talk about himself and the Blessed Ever Virgin Mary, Mother of God. He talks about Jesus, too, and not as an aside.

My diocese must be different. The priests/bishop here don't stop talking about Jesus here (as it should be). There is a big focus here on Christ as servant, and on the faithful emulating that example.

The Saints and the Mother of God are spoken of in their relation to Christ and in terms of how they lived their lives in emulation of Christ.

Just so you know, Catholics were the ones who first called them "Lutherans." Luther preferred the term "Evangelical Catholic."

You just need to study Catholcism for yourself-then you'll eventually fall in love with the Church, as you also come to see that there never has been any other Church, and you'll become Catholic yourself. Or you can remain more or less ignorant.

I wouldn't doubt what you are saying. But still, they claim the name as in my little town we have St. Paul Lutheran Church and St. Matthew Lutheran Church.

So, even though we named them, they call themselves that now, too.

Boy, you'd hate our Orthodox divine liturgy then! LOL...written by St. John Chrysostom and St. Basil the Great, Early Church Fathers both, it invokes the name of the Most Holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary so many times your head will spin! The Orthodox and Catholics, like the ancient Church, love the Mother of God, who is the vessel and vehicle for our salvation.

I have zero problems with the name Mary. A lot of Lutherans do not realize that Luther maintained a deep devotion to Mary throughout his life; and as someone interested in Orthodoxy, Mary's name being mentioned isn't a problem for me whatsoever. I can, however, see exactly where this person in the OP is coming from. I hear Mary's name and the pope being talked about way more than Jesus'. Apparently cathaholicliz doesn't realize that 500 and 100 were figurative numbers.

Cathaholicliz - no need to show me how to turn pages. I've read the bible through in 3 different translations since last February - Apocryphal writings included.

Sorry-I coulda read a little more carefully.

Correction: She/he just needs to study Catholicism for themselves-then they'll eventually fall in love with the Church, as they also come to see that there never has been any other Church, and they'll become Catholic themselves. Or they can remain more or less ignorant.
