In a scathing missive, McMahon called the university a “mockery” and vowed to cut off all federal grant funding. We asked some of our sources to weigh in on what it means.

Time and time again over the last three months, the Trump administration has sent forceful letters to America’s colleges and universities, demanding sweeping changes and threatening to cut off federal funds in a way that has set off alarms for higher education leaders across the country. The government’s latest missive has only ramped up those concerns.

In a three-page letter sent to Harvard University on Monday evening, the Department of Education said federal agencies will no longer provide the wealthy institution with any grant funding, alleging that Harvard has engaged in a “systemic pattern of violating federal law” and calling it a “mockery of this country’s higher education system.”

A university spokesperson told Inside Higher Edthat the Trump administration’s actions “would impose unprecedented and improper control” and could lead to “chilling implications for higher education.” But conservative experts praised the letter as a forceful and necessary message. For others still, the document serves as a reminder that the Trump administration is seeking to impose a conservative ideological agenda on higher ed.

Harvard was once a college that educated ministers, and had the motto In Christi Gloriam. Years later, it changed it's motto to Veritas Christo et Ecclesiae, with Veritas on three books, two open to symbolize human reason, and the third closed to symbolize human reasons has limits. Now, the motto is just Veritas, on three open books to symbolize nothing is beyond human reasoning. If students were to protest that the concept of truth is a white patriarchal colonial concept, it will likely vanish as well.

The interesting thing is last year Harvard Jewish students sued the university for antisemitism. See :

Jewish students sue Harvard over 'rampant' anti-semitism

From the article, the students brought up Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination where federal funding is involved. If Harvard is indeed in violation, why should it receive Federal funding at all? With assets of around $50 billion, what would the cut-off of about $9 billion mean to it? Probably nothing, but if it is truly nothing, why the complaints at getting cut-off from Federal funds and grants?

Harvard will likely continue in some form, at least until alumni close their wallets and send their children to other universities.
