I had a very dear and troubled friend many years ago that after beating an addiction to heroin, found God, became a Christian and then developed and died from lung cancer, and this is what I told her when she lamented that she would miss her friends and loved ones when she passed away...
I told her that God is way bigger and deeper than most of us can imagine, but one thing that maybe we could kind of imagine is that He isn't stuck in time like we are. He exists in what we might best describe as the 10th dimension, totally transcendent with regard to space and time. As such, we won't miss anyone when we pass from this life to the next! The reason is that when we pass from the limits of mortal life in the 3rd dimension (material space) as we surf through life on the 4th (time), we are quite limited in how we naturally see and experience things. However, when we leave this plane of existence and go from this form of being to the next to be with God, we will no longer be stuck by and in material restraints, or limited by the perception of time. That when we die, we will all be gathered together in heaven in an instant as would would understand it here and now, so no... don't worry, you wait at all!
She seemed to be uplifted with the thought and turned to our Pastor who was listening to us talk, and asked him if that were possible. He said "I'm not sure, but I don't so why not!".
I'm not sure either, but it is my best guess at how to deal with such a hard to answer question.
If you're wondering what the 10th Dimension is, here's a video that makes it a bit easier to understand...
