This is a sad story. I find the reactions interesting. As a parent, I feel horrible for the parent whose child's life was threatened. Lots of others hate the parent and feel bad for the gorilla. How should we feel about this one?

Dead Gorilla

We teach our children that life is a cosmic accident, so it's only being consistent with that worldview to flip a coin over who has more value, the ape or the boy. In fact, the gorilla would likely be much more difficult to replace, so. . . In fact, if life is a cosmic accident then a rock has more value than the boy as it will last longer.

Indeed. It's only the doctrine of the Imago Dei that gives us a reason to highly esteem the life of man. According to Genesis 9 the gorilla would have to be killed if it killed the boy. A policy like that would never fly in our world today!

Because......master race and all......
Or, just unthinking people who didn't even try to use a high pressure hose, which has been used before in similar gorilla enclosure situations. Or, the tranquilizer gun.
Some person on the staff probably was tired of hearing all the screams for them to do something and so they did.

It's sad.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with my comment or the post I responded to.

Not according to Thane Maynard, the naturalist, scientist, and zoo director. He may have been speaking from a PR standpoint but
Which has absolutely nothing to do with my comment or the post I responded to.
I figured it would improve a remark about Master Race afforded toward a German citizen.

A tranquilizer would have saved the boy and the gorilla. The decision to kill this gorilla was irresponsible.

Edit:
I've seen this opinion before, and I think the zoo officials have a
better idea what to do than pretty much anyone reading the story.

I don't think they had in mind domesticating gorillas.

Correction. It is an opinion. One you don't approve but an opinion none the less.

Perhaps the gorilla wanted to be playful with the child. The video shows that at one point it stood the child up; at one point they touched hands. Perhaps dragging the child was an attempt at play. Perhaps it was a response to the screaming. In any event, saving the life of the child, potentially killed by accident or in the gorilla's violent response to a perceived threat, was paramount.

It's both, but opinion is more correct in this case.
Attitudes can be good or bad. They're just emotional
positions.

a : a mental position with regard to a fact or state <a helpful attitude>
b : a feeling or emotion toward a fact or state

If we were talking about the Gorilla violently attacking another Gorilla, or engaging in property damage of some sort, then I can see the hose/tranquilizer approach...however, given that the hose isn't a guaranteed method, and a tranquilizer dart isn't an instant take-down (especially on an animal that size).

However, if I were to see a 4 year old in that situation, and on the table is a tranquilizer gun, a pressure hose, and a 5.56 rifle...I'm grabbing the item #3.

Whats wrong with that?
blogger-image--290920459.jpg

What about walking a fully grown adult woman around with a leash?

I remember watching a documentary where a couple did just that. The reactions were funny. A bunch of cars honking and parents being outraged.

Those harnesses/leashes are seen as undignified, treating children as animals and pets instead of human beings. And the first article of the german Grundgesetz states that the dignity of man shall not be harmed.

After a bit of research: Those leashes are lawfull, but heavily, heavily frowned upon in germany.
Some kids 9 month old to 5 years old love to walk and run. With out wanting to hold parents hands. I see nothing wrong with the leash. Of course I watched many toddlers.
An German children don't jump into gorilla enclosures that often, either, so I guess it's not too bad.
I doubt it happens much in the US too.

Chalk it up to cultural differences.

No, just like this gorilla wasn't.
I'll just assume you are pulling some legs, here, and move on.
