Let me begin by saying that I really dig the Grateful Dead; I hold their lyrics, songwriting, and improvisational abilities (especially) in high regard. I'm not what I would consider a "Deadhead", I own few bootlegs or live recordings, and although I've heard quite a few recordings by no means have I heard everything or consider myself an expert on the subject. With that in mind...
*I really prefer the live recordings of the Dead that don't include Mickey Hart. I love the Rhythm Devils stuff and the drum features, but Bill Kreutzmann really stands out on the recordings I've heard from the early-mid 70s (after MH had left the band). The feel was a lot more elastic, there was so much freedom in BK's playing; while the interplay btw the two drummers is very cool at times it just doesn't do it for me the same way...
*Most of the Deadheads I've met have vehemently protested when I've said that (IMO) the band's live vocal harmonies usually left a lot to be desired. Sure, there were moments when they were on; by and large though, my listening experience has left me with this impression.
I've always been annoyed by people who hold the Dead (or any group) up as if they were musical gods, incapable of any imperfection. I don't really know what I hoped to gain by posting this; perhaps just the reassurance that there are other people who have valid criticisms of a group they really like and don't let those criticisms get in the way of their enjoyment of the music.
So... Any similar "confessions" about this group or others you know and love?
