  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi, I know I haven't been posting a whole lot recently, but last weekend something happened.  I went to a "Youth Encounter" retreat in our diocese (It's like a Cursillo for young people).  It was quite amazing.  One of the best things was that only about a little more than half were Catholics.  The rest were not.  There was a mutual respect for each other's beliefs that I had not been seeing for a very long time in school or anywhere.  The whole weekend, I did not hear of one fight, debate, etc... between anybody.  It also helped me to get my life back on track a little bit.

I picked up a Cursillo application today after mass. I don't think I can go though. On the back it has a place for the pastor to sign:

"I know this applicant and can verify that he/she is free to receive the Sacraments and has the potential to become a leader in Christianity in his or her community."

:sigh:

I was kind of hoping I could go. That got me pretty depressed. Oh well... :(

Hi humblejoe,

 Perhaps you should speak with your pastor.  If this is interdenominational it might not be the Catholic standard of receiving Sacraments (possibly only having been baptized if you are baptized already).  Never hurts to ask.

God bless

I guess I could ask, but since I've never heard of it outside of the Catholic church that I go to sometimes right now, I doubt it's interdenominational.

And if you ask me, I think it's a little prideful...

"Weeeeelllllllll, we see you're not a practicing Catholic!!! Well now, you won't be mooching off of our spiritual journey!!! *snooty-snoot-snoot* "

Or, Joe - if you can find a Walk to Emmaus or Tres Dias group - they are very similar retreats, but non-Catholic.

But the thing is, I want to do something with Catholics. I'm trying to learn about it, and I want to make some Catholic friends and do stuff with them, but it's like it's not working and I don't see them but two times a week and I'm starting to get upset about this stuff. :sigh: I feel like I can't get anything to work. :(

Hey Pax! That's great! I'm glad you had a good time! Have you ever been to a Youth 2000? Those are awesome! We've been to a couple, and you always leave feeling fired up and in love with God and His Church!!

Your sister in Christ,
Erin

Actually there was a Youth 2000 retreat in a nearby town last year, but I was unable to go.  I heard they were really great retreats.  I'll be keeping an eye out for any upcoming ones.

I was pretty sure that any Christian could make a Cursillo (At lease I'm pretty sure that's how it is in my area).  Everything presented would most likely be presented within the realms of Catholic Doctrine and if there was a Mass, Noncatholics would not be allowed to receive Holy Communion.

It never hurts to ask.  Give it a shot.

That does sound very frustrating. I mean, I almost certainly don't have a calling to the ministry (although I sometimes wonder)... should the fact that I'm never likely to be a spiritual leader keep me from participating in retreats that will help others lead me? :)
