  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm puzzled by DC Talk's dissapearance at the height of their popularity. In addition to their music they wrote books which advocated a very radical uncompromising deep Christian commitment even in the face of persecution and death. Kevin Max left the group to pursue a career in secular music. There seemed to be a discrepency between words and practice or am I missing something.

I don't think that Kevin Max went secular in his music career. I have never even heard a hint of that. Last I knew he was singing for Audio Adrenaline, briefly. Anyway, you can check this interview out when you get a chance.

As far as DCTalk being at the height of their career, I don't think that's true either. As the article stated Jesus Freak sold 1.7 million and Supernatural sold only (right, only) a million. While that's a lot and they could have done another album and seen what they could do with it, it was also a great time to go solo. Toby Mac has done quite well for himself in the Christian music market, and Mike Tait is, last I knew, singing for the Newsboys. That's not a bad gig, right? I think if they'd done another album it would have tanked and the opportunity to go solo would have passed. That's my take anyway.

Just for the record, I was a huge fan of DCTalk. I saw them in concert no less than 5 times. Twice for Jesus Freak and twice for Supernatural. Once, my wife and I saw them in a bar in Kansas City where Sixpence None the Richer opened for them. That was pretty cool.

I also was a big DC Talk fan. The thought that Kevin went secular came from an interview in which he stated he wanted to do music that was not just for Christians to enjoy but all people, other faiths and atheists included. The purpose of the music was to get the listeners to ask question about their worldview and why they believed as they did. It is pretty clear he was not talking about going secular but about exposing grace to a broader audience, as the interview was done for his album release "The Blood" which was about, well, the redemption and grace found in the blood of Christ. Still, that quote got taken out of context and was therefore misunderstood.

I also wasn't surprised they went solo. I thought Supernatural was enough of a musical change, and not as well received, that they were at a point of either breaking up to do something new or having to stay together and go back to a more traditional DC Talk sound.

Tait is still with the Newsboys.

My wife and I saw DC Talk on the Supernatural tour only a week or so before my daughter was born. We still tell her it was her first concert because I'm sure she could hear and feel the music.

This for me is the most plausible reason. Their sound had changed so much that maybe it was getting difficult to justify keeping the DC Talk name going.

It's either that or they had some big falling out and decided not to air their dirty laundry in public, meaning that we never got to hear the reasons for the split.
