I don't know if I am posting this in the correct thread. Moderators would you please change if it is not appropriate here.

I have just heard that the founder of Teen Challenge and the leader of World Challenge, founding pastor of Time Square Church, New York City, David Wilkerson, has been killed in a car accident in Texas on Wed, 27 April. His wife is in hospital and seriously ill.

He was aged 79. See HERE.

I have a great affinity with Teen Challenge and its drug rehabilitation ministry as I worked for a short time with that ministry in Australia.

In Christ,
Oz

I was involved somewhat with Teen Challenge when Roger Helle got it up and running in Omaha Nebraska back in the late 70's. I'm sorry to hear about David Wilkerson's tragic death. I've seen the man preach and God used him mightily. However I had to walk away from him and his more recent teachings that he embraced the latter part of his life, with no small degree of controversy that he brought about upon himself. None the less I'm confident that he's gone home to our Lord and I'm praying for his wife and family and friends.

56,
Sadly, David Wilkerson's prophecy in 2009 about a major, imminent catastrophe in New York City did not happen. See HERE.

Nevertheless, he was a humble man of God with a vision. I have written up a brief article on him for my homepage, "Sudden death of David Wilkerson".

Here is what he wrote in his last blog, “David Wilkerson Today” of 27 April 2011, the very day he died:
The amazing thing about David Wilkerson and the people he inspired (I am one of them) was that he loved the unlovely and ministered at street level with them.

In the 1970s, I was on the streets of downtown Brisbane, Australia, running a coffee shop with some other workers, and ministering to the junkies and prostitutes. Why? David alerted me to the need and God moved upon my heart.

That's an amazing statement he made on his blog, "David Wilkerson Today", on the very day he entered the presence of the Lord.

Yes, like me, he was a frail man with failings. I wish he had not made that false prophesy about New York City in 2009. But have a guess what? Even with God's Word before me in written form, I can make errors of interpretation as a fallible human being. The redeemed on this earth are not perfect. That time is still ahead of us in our elevation to glory.

Overall, I judge David Wilkerson to be a humble man of God with a vision that took effect in the lives of those who needed the Saviour.

56,
Because I live Down Under and have not had contact with David Wilkerson in many years, except what I read of the 2009 prophecy on the www and in Christian journals. What were some of his later teachings that caused you concern?

As someone who attended Times Square Church for about a 5 year stretch of my life, I, too, am saddened to hear of David Wilkerson's passing. About 12 years ago, while I was still an active member of that church, I wrote Pastor David and asked for his blessing to branch out and begin a Bible study at my friend's apartment in Pennsylvania. Well, Pastor David gave me his blessing and it was at that first Bible study that I met the woman who is now my wife of 10 years and the mother of our 3 beautiful children. During my time at Times Square Church, there were several times when I disagreed with Pastor David's teachings. That, coupled with some other things, ultimately led me to leave the church. Having said that, as I've surfed the internet and read some news reports of David's death, I also have an overwhelming understanding of how many people's lives he positively influenced for the kingdom of God. Much more than I could ever even imagine to influence myself. My hope is that David Wilkerson is now in the presence of the Lord. For any who are interested, Times Square Church will be doing a memorial service for David Wilkerson some time in the next two weeks and streaming it live from their website:

Times Square Church | Pastor David Wilkerson | David Wilkerson, Carter Conlon, Patrick Pierre, William Carrol, Teresa Conlon, Ben Crandall

May God's comfort be upon David's remaining family and friends in this time of sadness...even though David is probably fully appreciating the joy of the Lord as I type.

I definitely respect those that give of themselves to help those in need but I really wonder about those that feel the need to prophesy. They show that, though they love Christ, the voice they listen to is not always Christ.

While there are those who get it wrong in prophecy and biblical interpretation (I'm one of those), I still believe in the continuing gift of prophecy as in I Cor 12-14.

I have found Wayne Grudem's book, The Gift of Prophecy in the Early Church and Today to be one of the finest expositions I have read.

This is probably not the thread to discuss this aspect of theology. David Wilkerson's book, Set the Trumpet to Thy Mouth, also caused me some concern with its content.

However, he was a man of God who served the Lord faithfully for many, many years. I see where his death was only a few days away from his 80th birthday.

I'll be shedding tears for him for a long time to come I am sure.
He was very dear to me though I never met him in person. His writing has had a huge impact on my life for decades.

God bless his soul and God comfort his family.

In spite of sorrow I am Very happy for him, knowing how much he longed to be with Jesus! And now he is!!

Nicky Cruz was here twice. He layed on hands and prayed for me. There was no money in it for him, he loves God and he loves people. He has a heart to serve.

I remember David Wilkerson had a urgent message about 1000 fires. Then I was watching TBN and saw a documentary about 1000 fires in Hatti after the earthquake. For me the prophecy was forfilled. But for David Wilkerson he always insisted this was something that was going to take place in NYC. He had some common sense instructions about keeping some money around in case the bank machine goes down. Keep some food around in case there is a run on the grocery store. All the things we saw take palce in Hatti could happen any where at any time without any warning. But esp. it could happen in NYC.

It had to do with his visions, which did not come to pass, etc, starting back with his first one in the 70's. Believe me, I know a bunch of us huddled around a cassette tape player listening with awe and some degree of fear, to the urgency of David's sincerely delivered, yet later to be proved false vision. I also had some issues with how he flip flopped on the issue of contemporary christian music/christian rock, where at first he was against it, then later he claimed God showed him that it was okay depending on the heart motivation of the Christian artists performing said music, and then he went back to his old position with a vengeance against CCM with his book about the subject. He pulled a lot of scripture out of context in a bad manner of hermeneutics and exegesis to buttress his illogical argument on that issue, and it was a tactic he's also use to defend his ongoing visions, which I have no doubt that he sincerely believed were true revelations from God.

I still think God used David mightily, but sadly he did get off track on a few things that I know I feel were wrong, which he wouldn't be the first Christian and preacher to do so. Paul had to correct Peter, etc, and we are all frail creatures. What I do know is that the man loved Jesus intensely and he has gone home to be with our Lord.

"Sadly, David Wilkerson's prophecy in 2009 about a major, imminent catastrophe in New York City did not happen. "

If I remember correctly he didn't specify New York. I think this event is still on its way. Are you referring to the warning he gave in March of '09....or was it March of 2010?

All I know is that within my spirit, lately I keep feeling that something is coming....Jesus has said to me something about 'warn.' And to be living holy unto Him.

Not trying to be argumentative here at all.....we are living in serious times and I think we need to be drawing very close to Jesus and amending our lives in any way He reveals to us. I don't know how to explain it...there's just a caution in my heart.

Okay, editing......here is a link to that message~http://davidwilkersontoday.blogspot.com/2009/03/urgent-message.html

Here is a link from a Homeland Security website. Seems like our government is expecting a catastrophe.

http://www.hstoday.us/briefings/tod...ll-held/d8301e4be8e83beb6e56c4a1be15ff0a.html

This is not the first time I personally have heard things about the New Madrid fault line. I think God is trying to give us warning ahead of time.

There was actually a time in history that the Mississippi ran backwards temporarily because of a severe earthquake. If such a quake does indeed happen it would wreak havoc that we have not experienced. The US Navy has even drawn up maps of what the US will look like after such an event.
Anyway.....we need to stay close to Jesus and also live our witness of Him. I would say we are definitely living in times that are frightening, the ones Jesus forewarned us of~

And there shall be signs in the sun, and moon, and stars, and on the earth anxiety of nations, in bewilderment at the roaring of the sea, and agitation, men fainting from fear and the expectation of what is coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.

And then they shall see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and much glory.

And when these matters begin to take place,

look up and lift up your heads,

because your redemption draws near.”

Luke 21:17-18, 25-28

Amylisa,
In that prophecy of March 7, 2009, David Wilkerson wrote:
David Wilkerson did mention New York City as i have highlighted. We are seeing things worldwide that point to a disorderly, even chaotic, situation. I'm thinking of Egypt, Libya, Syria.

I wonder how many have taken David's advice to store up 30 days of non-perishable food. Do you think 30 days will be enough?
