The German branch of his company doesn’t make as much as the American branch, said the man in the nice little bougie restaurant, speaking with scorn, because they get too many holidays. The company doesn’t make them work hard enough. He told his coworker how much more his part of their company made, and shared the secret.
“Here’s what you do,” he said. “You fire three people and hire one to replace them.” He seemed to assume that you would work that one like a dog, as you had already been working the three. The other man agreed. My young friend, sitting at the next table splurging on the nice coffee, was horrified.
The man mentioned one of his employees who wasn’t making enough for the company, not as much as his long hour working peers, and didn’t seem to understand the need to. He fired the poor man, apparently recently, a few days before Christmas.
People talk about the lessons of Christmas, usually along the lines of the angels’ declaration, “On earth peace, good will to men.” But do you know what is a big lesson of Christmas? Don’t be those men in the little bougie restaurant.
