Hi,

Do you think that it is fair that David Hicks was put in the slammer in Guantanemo Bay for 5 years without having a trial? If what he had or had not done did not constitute a crime in Australia, why didn't John Howard do something about it before?

Should he face imprisonment when he's brought back, or do you think he's suffered enough and should be allowed back into the community?

Discuss.

David should have been entitled to a fair trial. Fair trial meaning that if he is found guilty of an offence, that he receives the appropriate consequences. There is no excuse for him being detained for 5 years without the option of appeal let alone fair trial. I think it's appalling.

I have to agree regardless of whether he did something wrong or not he is a human and an Australian so he's entitled to a fair trial.

There's no excuse for him being in Guantanemo Bay for the past 5 years. If the US government don't belive it's fair for American Citizens then why should the Australian government accept it?

If it turns out he's done the wrong thing than ofcorse he should receive the appropriate punishment.

But as far as him being in Guantanemo thats just inhumane!

Although I certainly think he should have been tried sooner, I find it rather difficult to have any sympathy for him. I find it mildly offensive that he runs off to train with and fight alongside the enemies of Australia and then has the audacity to claim that he isn't being looked after by the Australian governement.

I also believe he should serve any sentence in America. I don't see why we would want him back here where we, as taxpayers, will have to foot the bill for his jail term.

Just my opinions,

Blessings to you all

He's a POW (fighting with Taliban forces, the government at the time). The rules of war are not being followed by the Americans

I think he should be locked up for a long time, but he like all humans are entitled to be charged and trialed. not trialing him for 5 years is BS (bit stupid). but tell your adverage american that, and you'll be accused of supporting terrorists

5 years is insanity, unethical and inhumane....
they obviously have nuthin on him if its takin soo long..
mayb he was trainin with the taliban/al quieda, does that make him our enemy?? whos to say that he wasnt an undercover agent gainin intel on bin laden... and unfortunately he himself has been shafted/double crossed... mayb he got dirt on georgie bush, like suplying bin laden with weapons and training in the first place....

i bet that if we had an american in our prison for same reason, we would have 100,000 american troops on our doorstep.... guarenteed...

OK, so David Hicks has been sentenced and will be a free man by the end of the year. What are your thoughtd about this? Too lenient ? Too harsh ? Just right?

Just interested to know what you all think

Blessings to you all,

i dont think he should be allowed to serve out his 9 months in Australia... I think he has suffered enough by being locked up for 5yrs without any trial and i think that is wrong on the US behalf... he should of been trialled at the very start and if either government had no evidence on him they should have let him go... thats how it works here

Maybe it's not right that he was detained for so long without a trial. If this was illegal, then obviously it shouldn't have happened and whoever's responsible should be held accountable.

But there's way too much sympathy for him. Why are we so worried about bringing David Hicks home? Shouldn't we be more worried about keeping convicted terrorists locked up?

mayb he was trainin with the taliban/al quieda, does that make him our enemy??
Absolutely!

Exactly, pastordavidd!!
As I said earlier, ask the families of the victims. Enough of this false sympathy. What is it with these people who think they can heal the so called disadvantaged by denouncing their own country, their beliefs? Or those who oppose the mores of our society and champion the ethics and religious morals of a ideology diametrically and uncompatible with our own? I've had a gutful of these traitors and their supporters. David Hicks is just one of them. The others are residing in our country, supporting him and supporting the preachers of doom who have encouraged him and his ilk to kill our citizens. Shame!
