  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Four of the seven, as well as The Great Divorce.

I'll get to the analogy. Just wanted to let you know there is a blue telephone box on my desk at work. 1 in a 1000 people say, "Cool Tardis". Saw your signature and had to give you a thumbs up

It was actually when I reached out to the bible for support and specifically the NT. What happened, was really an accident and it turned into a very thorough review of the NT from a scholarly and historical standpoint - peeling back the layers. I devoured tons of work of scholars and historians of all different breeds and came to the conclusion, the NT had bits that were historical, but overall, it was not.

This stimulated me to review the entire Christian story and try to reconcile the same with the realities of the world and I simply couldn't do it, if I was honest with myself.

I acquired a lot of knowledge and I overlayed this new knowledge with realities and it didn't reconcile. When I believed, much of it was from being brought up that way and having a true desire and need to believe someone was looking out for me and that is powerful motivation, that was eventually superseded by reality.

BTW the OT is much more historical. The NT has a lot of teaching and much less actual stories. I actually get bored with the NT a lot. That's why I read more of the old.

I would call myself an atheist towards the Christian God and personal Gods in general. In regards to a universal God, who does not interact or care about peoples lives, I would give that God a bit better chance of being real, when you look at the realities of the world. So, I am agnostic towards universal Gods and atheist towards personal Gods.
Same. The reason I call myself an agnostic atheist rather than a Deist is because even the general concept of a deity is a more narrow category than the forces that I think could be responsible for creating the universe.
