  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"Hoping to God on high,Is like clinging to straws,While drowning"-from the song What You Are

"There is no God above,No hell below,It's here with us,It's up to us,To keep afloat"-from the song Mother Father

Dave Matthews said in an interview (US Magazine, June 1998): "I'm glad some people have that faith. I don't have that faith. If there is a God, a caring God, then we have to figure he's done an extraordinary job of making a very cruel world.

Dave matthews: "'It would be safe to say that I'm agnostic,' Matthews says. 'However, I do feel as though we owe a faith to the world and to ourselves. We owe a grace and gratitude to things that have brought us here. But I think it's very ignorant to say, `Well, for everything, God has a plan.' That's like an excuse....'"March 4, 2001 edition of the Boston Globe

So, as Christians, I think we should think carefully about aligning ourselves with dave matthews. though dave is undoubtedly musically gifted, he fails to see where his talent comes from. just a thought...
dave isn't a christian. of course he makes comments about how he doesn't believe in God. why wouldn't he? it's better that he's decided for himself what he believes than just to pretend he's a christian, like so many americans today.

He grew up in a religious home, but his father died when he was about 10, and later his sister was murdered by her husband who then shot himself, and after that he turned his back on religion and that's what his comment about god creating a "cruel world" is all about.

i partly agree with him on the comment, "I think it's very ignorant to say, `Well, for everything, God has a plan.' That's like an excuse"

alot of people throw that line around and they don't even think about it. Dave's sister is brutaly murdered and someone says "Hey, it's alright. God has a plan" Why wouldn't dave be ****ed at God? That's all he knows of God. To him, God is just someone who has a plan to kill his family. He's just not a christian.

an another thing- if you want to avoid those songs that have the lines (quoted in the post above) about God, just don't buy the cd Everyday. it's a waste of money anyway. the music isn't that great.
