Months later i met my beautiful strong christian wife.....
We have been married for 33 years

After months of feeling uneasy about this relationship

I think this is key. Such a long-running feeling of unease is never good in a relationship (or much of anything, really). It's one thing to not feel that high of early relationships, where you just can't stop touching each other & giggling, because that will always come to an end eventually. This level of unease is certainly something to be taken seriously. I do hope you talked it out with your partner, explaining the situation to him, and trying to make it easier for him. Overall, though, with the information given, I'd say you did the right thing.
