I started watching Lost a while ago and loved it! I was completely addicted. I was watching the 3rd season, and then it got to the part where 'Jacob' comes in...and something didn't seem quite right. I don't mean to be legalistic or critical by any means, but I was wondering if Lost was delving into the dark spiritual side of things. Then there's John Locke and his seemingly new age approach to the island, as well as the "monster", which seems almost dark to me. I don't want to cause anger among Lost fans, and I'm definitely not attacking the show. I would love to keep on watching, but when things delve into dark spiritual influences, I know that's dangerous to subject oneself to. Has anyone else felt there's something wrong? or am I just misreading things and not seeing the context? I haven't seen anything past that episode, so I very well might be. But I'm really looking for some answers and can't seem to find anything addressing those issues. Please offer opinions and insight

I think the writers were going more for the "darkness" in people's personalities more than any spiritual things. More like there's a good side and a bad side to everyone.

I think Jacob is a mystery yet to be revealed, perhaps in this weeks epi.
I suspect its something to do with time travel or being stuck in a rip in the fabric of time/space.

The smoke monster is an advanced sort of technology and not something spiritual either, the writers have yet to fully explain it.

hm. that makes sense. I guess I'll have to just pray about it. Ultimately, God is the only one who sees things for what they are. but I appreciate your input! I have a VERY hard time discerning things for myself, and sometimes I need the input of others who can discern.

Most of what you're seeing is explained through the time travel element of the show. It all seems spooky, dark, eerie, but it's also all beginning to be explained as the show wraps up its last two seasons.

I have been an avid fan, but I haven't seen anything in there that has given me pause as a Christian, personally.

To the original poster:

Please forgive me for this post being a little too long. I too have been having some trouble with Lost. However, unlike you, I have continued to watch even till now on season five. I am by no means telling you what to do. I do know that God gives us discernment through His holy spirit.

You see, I'm very much into the show. I enjoy the mysteries and must say, the writers of the show are very good at leaving you hanging ever week. But like I said I too still have a part of me that feels uneasy. I won't reveal any major plot details, but the constant theme of life after death is what I am bothered most by.

The Bible makes it very clear what happens when someone dies. They either go to Heaven or Hell. I'm afraid that Lost is trying to blur the lines of that. Yes, time travel has been introduced, but I don't think it will be used to solve the issue of why dead people can be seen, at least not entirely. Then there is the issue of being brought back to life and other things.

The main point, without getting too wordy in this post, is this. I too am praying about Lost. I just know how easily Satan can throw subtle influences into things. We must be careful at all times. Sorry for the lengthy post.

I've actually found the religious elements that have been incorporated into the show rather interesting.

We've had Mr. Eko and his walking stick (called the Jesus Stick by Charlie) that had alot of scriptural references. Eko and Charlie recited the 23rd Pslams. Another interesting relation to Christianity is the finding of the Old Testament in the Hatch-like place that the "Tailies" found. Eko took this book and when they made it to the other side of the island he showed it to Locke. Inside was the missing piece of the orientation video for the Swan Station (Locke's Hatch) from the Dharma Initiatve. When presenting the book to Locke, Eko tells him of Josiah, the king of Judah that found the Book of Law, or Old Testament, and how it was this, not gold , that the temple was rebuilt. Claire names her baby, Aaron, and Eko loses no time expounding on the Biblical implications. In the episode "Fire + Water", Charlie begins having visions of Aaron in grave danger. During one of the visions, his mother and Claire are dressed in robes and have halos around their heads, suddenly a dove descends from the sky and Charlie wakes up. Eko tells him of the heavens parting and a dove coming down when Jesus himself was baptized. Later in the episode, Claire and Aaron are baptized by Eko. You have Jack, the man of science and Locke, the man of faith. You have the two skeletens found, named Adam and Eve. Rose has prayed for everyone's well being. Even on last nights episode, we see Ben talking to Jack in the church about about Thomas. There's more I'm probably forgetting.

So there are alot of rather interesting religious references. I don't find the show to be dark, but more thought provoking, imo.

Hey guys, thanks so much for your input! I really value it. I know that the most important thing is to pray and seek the Holy Spirit's guidance, but I think seeking fellow believer's discernment is also very vital. Stryker395, I especially appreciate your post, as it helps so much to know that I'm not just out on a limb by myself, but that there are others who are wondering. Discernment is definitely not my spiritual gift. I can't discern a thing....and to be quite honest it's very frustrating. MY family has been going through a different time where we are trying to be very aware and on the lokout for things that are spiritually dark, that can lead to bondage in our lives. I'm obsessive-compulsive, so my mind takes that awareness and puts it into overdrive, not allowing me to see the difference between spiritual darkness and the unknown-that looks like darkness, if that makes sense. If anyone else has any sort of input, or any more comments on the context of the show that would bring somethings to light (especially the whole "jacob" thing) I would be VERY greatful.

i am sad... i have been a big fan of lost... after being open and praying for answers a friend called and opened my eyes to the subtle illuminate things that are going on in tv/movies and i have found many links about it on general and on Youtube... i don't believe it is coincidental...

do what you all want but you need to know about it...there is a lot of occult symbolism tied into the show...

http://www.hatch23.com/

please don't reply back to me in a negative light about this, i am sad as it is...maybe you can tell me what your opinion is about if subtle occult stuff impacts christians or no... a lot of people know about Disney movies being bad... is there anything decent out there watchable? :(

I'm sorry you're sad about this HisLilLamb. You all need to do what you feel you need to do for yourselves and your own spiritual walk.

Please just be aware that not everyone feels these influences on their spiritual life due to shows they watch on television. I am certainly one of them. What I watch, especially in a science fiction show like Lost, has absolutely no bearing on my walk with the Lord. I can talk to and be friends with atheists, I can listen to music, watch television, watch movies, read books, and still know the truth of God, the truth of Jesus, put my trust in that truth, and not be drawn away.

This doesn't make me better or worse than anyone else. It makes me different from some. You guys having a problem with shows like Lost doesn't make you better or worse than anyone else. You're just different from some. We all have our own paths and our own influences.

Romans 14 was written specifically for issues like this. My primary caution is that we not try to convince each other that our views and feelings on this issue are the only ones that matter, and that what is right (or wrong) for us is right (or wrong) for everyone else.

snoochface, thankyou. i just read Romans 14 and it really
blessed me... :amen:
I just heard a message yesterday about not being self-righteous like the pharisees and like Romans said pointing out what is right and wrong...you helped tie that in...
i don't want that kind of spirit....looking down on others that do things another thinks is wrong..

I don't feel like it has affected me watching it except for watching the things of this world desensitizes some of us and gets us used to what is evil, for me anyway that happens if I watch too much tv...
...we are not partaking in the evil by being entertained by it? I know i have a lot to sort out for myself... I personally drifted a bit and am trying to get closer to God again... :)
(and after watching to season five, boy, i just want the answers to the show!... i think with that site it makes sense, the underworld and they said what they believe the others are... so even if you want it for "theories" its good to check out ;)
