It sounds like you have written off understanding of prophecy as not worth the effort.

Read the whole of Daniel 9. Note the nature and urgency of his prayer. Note what drove his prayer - knowledge that it was time for a key event - to get out of Babylon. Another key event was the very coming to Jesus to provide a way out our sins. The prophecy dated that to minimize the likelyhood of getting the wrong guy and aid in identifying the right One. Also, God was counting down the days and He let Daniel in on it.

We stand on the brink of the 2nd Coming. As a point in time gave Daniel urgency in his prayer, so should also the upcoming point in time fire our urgency. That will shape our prayer, our message, our service, our life.

It is well worth the effort to be engaged for study and service.
