You have to believe Your characters lies then Your audience will believe them too. So if You invent a good brainwasher mashine You need no lie detector. And lie detectors could be false as someone here said. If You want a good brains read proverbs and buy two kettlebells, one very light one to play and toss around with while You cite and memorize scripture and one heavier like 20 lbs for more serious workouts so You do not get too much dirt in your brains and alzheimers too soon. Plus it is good for circulation and good bones and muscles. Do it five minutes a day and live five more years.

What it is getting done is not irrelevant though.

It is, one the subject is the science behind whatever gets done.

The ability to communicate at light speed around the world is only a good thing if the majority of the information being transmitted is true, useful and not harmful.

Maybe people should communicate honestly then.
Either way, the communications itself is only possible thanks to the scientific explanations that power that technology.

Science makes us more powerful, it doesn't make us better.

Science gives us knowledge about the world. What you do with that knowledge is upto.

What use is science to a population that alternately fries itself out and stirs itself to riot on mindless entertainment and broadcast punditry?

Point?

But science will be there to help others market little pills for that population

I think you meant "pharma". Not science.

And science will be there to track the products that population consumes, and their voting patterns, and choose their commercials for them...

No, that's also not something that science does.
Certain companies or government organizations might do that.

I'll tell you want I want science to do. Invent an infallible lie-detector.

You mean engineering now.

That would be culturally useful in legal courts, politics and pretty much everything

It would also be usefull when abducting government officials to squeeze secret information out of them, which wouldn't be that usefull for the people from that country.

I hope you understand by now that there isn't anything ethical or unethical about the scientific practice of understanding the world around us. It's what people do what that intel and/or resulting technology that has ethical implications.

Perhaps you should stop ranting and think about what you are really "against", because it sounds like you wish to throw out the baby along with the bathwater.

I agree with this statement.

I do what science does not. I question the nature of the baby.

Why would science bother with that question?
Science is a useful methodology to understand the phenomena of reality and that's it. Nothing more, nothing less.

PS: the thread title is "the dangers of doing science". Not "the danger of developing technology" or whatever.

I have never really understood why folks try to reject 'science' as a whole, while they use their computer, call people on their cellphone, and drive around in their air conditioned car. We rely upon antibiotics to cure things which would otherwise have been fatal a hundred yeas ago. We eat amazing foods from all over the planet, and we all use electricity every single day. We have access to information at our fingertips that humans 100 years ago couldn't even dream about. I can't even imagine the impoverishment that even a *king* from a few hundred years ago might feel were they to spend a few days in the modern world, and then be forced back into the past to live out the rest of their lives. We have a it really good today thanks to science and technology.

Granted science can be used for any purpose, good or evil, selflessly, or selfishly. Even with the risks, it's still way better than not having it at all. I can't imagine life without science and technology. My children can't even remember a time before cellphones, computers and the internet, but I sure do. :)

Our oldest kid (11) is deadly afraid of small nice brown ants. When I was a kid I ran barefoot through the path in the wood that was filled with thousand of ants and I didn't notice if any bit me. Now even 7 year olds learn computer programming basics in school and dad, the computer programmer learns too on the evenings :). They even make robots in school at age 11. Then they war with them...of course.

Hmm have You read the Smurfs? There is the Antismurf that does not like anything in the books and He always says so, so the other Smurfs will know. - I don't like picnics...

Have You noticed nowadays don't celebrate birthdays as before, we congratulate on facebook. We get alienated in real life and choose cyber instead. Then we do not need to clean house for our friends.
Well, not everybody have to like science. Truth is science brought us electricity and my hairs stand up more and I feel loaded and electrified a sence of hectic stress in a house where there is electricity. Without electricity I feel calm - I use to think I am allergic to electricity, beeps, lamps, tvs, gadgets, engines, strobos, stereos, etc. It stresses sleepingrythm and wakingtime. I know that because I lived in a summercottage during summer sometimes where there was no water except a well, no shower or bath, I rarely used the electricity. No beeping stuff, did not listen to radio or tvs. Only thunder and storm and wheather preassure and the fire in the stove. One could take the bike and go swimming. It is liberating to take a long paus from all cyber and tv radio internet and relax in nature or a cottage.

This ^.

The dangers of doing science mean that appropriate health and safety precautions should be taken - use of safety equipment, suitable clothing (lab coats, etc.), protective goggles, fume cupboards, contamination & infection control, and so-on.

Also, do not perform unethical experiments.
