I was raised Southern Baptist, and I was always taught against dancing in the church. We couldn't even have dancing at wedding receptions if it was held in the fellowship hall or on Church grounds. In the past few years, a lot of the old ways of thinking have changed. Now my church has a dance team, which I was a part of. I recently had to move churches. I love dancing praises to God.

As Baptists, what are your views on dancing in the church?

Good Day, Faithweaver

I was a memeber of a pentacostal church for a few years. Now I attend a Baptist "independant" church, and I sway and clap my hands against the song book now and then. I do get some "looks" but, hey I like it. Not sure if this meets your use of dancing.

Peace to u,

Bill

You realize that in the 1st century synagogue when Jesus was the teacher for that day part of the job of the teacher was to parade/dance the scrolls through the synagoge.

Being a disciple (according to the 1st century Jewish understanding) means learning to do what your rabbi/teacher/master does, so by golly I'm gonna dance.

Corporate worship is for God, not us. I don't see a problem with dancing in worship if it's for God and not you. I play bass in church every Sunday. If I played bass for me it would be wrong, if I play bass for God it's ok.

We have a lot of church tradition that is based on teaching sound doctrine. It seems restrictive until you understand the makeup of a congregation. A congregation looks just like the gathering at the sermon on the mount. You have the committed/submitted, the watchers/uncommitted, and even the lost.
How a church conducts corporate worship is important.

I have no problem with the committed Christian dancing. But I do have issues with some of the seeker concepts that are coming into churches. If I dance for God in the midst's of people dancing for their own emotional needs I am sure God will receive my offering. But I am not sure that it's right for others to miss sound teaching for the sake of keeping them in the house.

So for my 2 cents I am ok with it as long as worship is taught as a blessing to God and not a sensation for a brief moment.

Mike

Good worship of God is worshipping Him in Spirit and in Truth. God is a spiritual being, and as humans, we fall short of his grace. So when we worship - in church or other places - alone or not - we rend to Him the best posture our hearts can give.

Jesus is Truth incarnate. We must come to him caring not how our other brothers and sisters come. We do not want our worship to be shown to the rest of the world, but only to God. Thus who cares whether the person next is dancing or showing a stoic face? If he/she is worshipping God in Spirit and in Truth, then who are we to judge?

We should only care about how ourselves worship, for each and every one of us has our style of worship that is appealing to God.

In Truth,

Vincent

I don't think I could ever break into dance in church....Just couldn't do it heh
Raised fundamental, now southern, and nope...just couldn't do it...

I belly dance for exercise and my hubby...and at rennaisance festivals...but unlike most I'm covered from my neck to my toes...literally LOL THe ladies at church who know give me mixed messages...part shock and surprise, and part almost a weird morbid fascination as if what I do is sinful heh.

Of course...I don't think I'm talented enough to play the piano and dance at the same time ;) Now there are members of our youth group that sway and get downright jiggy with it...so...*shrugs* I guess to each his own, as long as it's for God, I'm not sayin' nuffin ;)

I went to my husband's cousin's wedding in June.
He wasn't a close cousin, but someone we saw about once a year.
My one (of 6) sister-in-law goes to the same church as I.
The wedding was in a church that was a different denomination, so I didn't expect to see anyone from my church there.
Well, one of the bride's maids was a lady that attends my church.
We get to the reception and I'm thinking and praying and struggling, the old me would have drank and been belle of the ball. What do I do? Ours is not an overtly legalistic church, but I'm still called to be an example. So, I talked to my husband. He said "Honey, be yourself." So, I did. I had one Bloody Mary before dinner and one after. I danced with my husband, my sister-in-laws (except the one that goes to church with me) I danced with my friend. The other Baptist sister-in-law danced. We had so much fun!
Solomon says:
Ecclesiastes 3:4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
There is a time and a place for everything.
Miriam danced, they sang and danced of David in 1 Samuel.
I don't think there is anything wrong with dancing in and of itself. I think it is the heart attitude with which you are dancing that makes the dancing right or wrong.
I'm going to a wedding tomorrow, I'm bringing my dancing shoes ;)

Nope...as a kid mom wouldn't let me...
as an adult...well...let's just say I'll leave it to the kids hehe

My little one loves that song though...she goes around singing it ... sometimes I think as a way to get me to say yes to her going outside :D

The Holy Spirit will move you if you want to be moved. It depends not on whether the Spirit is filling the place or not. The Spirit is not discriminate on basis of retreat camp or your - - - - closet. He must fill you heart, my friend.

Dancing in a church seems a very unusual thing to me. I never saw anyone do that in a meeting all my life.

I thought about it and what the Scriptures say.

1. David danced and God was well pleased.

2. Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind......does dancing cause others to look upon the shape of a female and bring their minds into wrong thoughts? Does the dance Glorify the person rather than God? all things to watch for.

3. There are many reasons perhaps that church is free of such outpourings.
in private we can express ourselves to God how The Spirit leads us. But if I were to fall on my face in a service because I cry to God or feel I need to get down as far as I can in reverence to Him. I think maybe I would disrupt other people during a service.

These are just my thoughts, I am not saying I am right on these points.
Please forgive me if I offend anyone

I am southern baptist, i have never found biblical back up for not dancing, in fact, David danced naked in praise of God!

I think, the no dancing thing had more to do with fear it would somehow lead to sex and lewdness than anything else.

My rule is, if it leads you to sin dont do it. Dancing can be good exercise, it can be done in praise of God and not be wrong in anyway.
