As a fellow Catholic, Riley, I think that ones prayer life is a very personalized one usually.

It depends on your walk and where God is pulling you.

To listen to His voice is paramount therefore, and to me at least, I badly need to spend some time doing lectio divina.

Its just reading a Gospel reading of the day, and then meditating on what lines or words stand out to you.

Then, quietly meditating on those stand out parts, and listening for Gods voice in response to the reading.

I begin this by asking for the Holy Spirit to come, while in a quiet place and making a specific time to do this, in a nice peaceful area of my home, with say, a blessed candle and images plus blessed crucifix.

When listening to His voice, in response to meditating on the words that jumped out at me during the Gospel reading, He often will give me a response in my heart of a word or two.

Its so wonderful, and startling to discover His voice and realize that He is always there and willing and wanting to spend time talking with you, in your heart.

To get to know the King of Kings and lord of lords is accomplished by getting to know Him and what He had to say while here on this Earth, and then listening to what He is saying about that right now-to you!

How can one have a personal relationship with God, if they don't put in the time, both reading as well as listening to what He has to say?

It is living water, it really is, that quenches the souls thirst.

There are free Catholic apps for this, and I have used one to guide me with a voice, and I have also just quietly done it by myself.

It was really helpful to write down the verse I read and the response from God that I heard in my soul.

This is just one prayer among many through out my day.....

I spend time reading the Scriptures, listening to them while I work, praying through scripture passages and memorizing them. There are times when memorizing scripture I feel consumed by the Holy Ghost and burst out in extemporaneous prayer. Memory work really helped me deepen my walk with God.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Yes.

Luke 11:1-4
Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.”

Matthew 6
7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
(This changes how you should pray)

9 “This, then, is how you should pray: (Follow this as a template, not word for word)

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

This may not help those of Catholic persuasion, but for anyone who is willing to take advice from Martin Luther: A Simple Way to Pray

He prays through the Apostles Creed, the Lord's Prayer, and the Ten Commandments. So for those who enjoy a daily prayer routine, this may be of use.

As a Discalced Carmelite Secular, OCDS, I pray the Liturgy of the Hours Morning and Evening
Prayer, every day. I also give at least 1 half hour to mental prayer, or as it's called today,
Contemplative Prayer. This is in the Rule of Life or Constitution for OCDS members.

Always remember when you're praying, that you're praying to a person rather than a thing. It sounds cliche but it's true. It's really easy to forget that God is a personal being, with thoughts, emotions, feelings, desires, a personality, rather than being a blank faced power in the heavens.

Figure out how to 'look Him in the eyes,' then speak straight from the soul. Pour out your soul to Him. He particularly likes verbal affection - also called adoration, and also praise, and thanksgiving.

If prayer seems hard, pray for more love for Jesus, and to enjoy Him more. Then prayer will get easy. Who doesn't want to talk to their loved one?

If I want to make requests, I usually make lists. I organize lists into categories - such as sanctification, then maybe one for various forms of wisdom, and so forth. Lately I've learned that whenever you want to pray a blessing for yourself, pray it for all of Jesus's church at one time. So instead of "give me this day my daily bread," instead, "give US this day our daily bread." Now that's a famous example, but that same principle can apply to any prayer.

Lastly, always remember that He enjoys to listen to you pray. It is not a chore for Him to listen to His church pray to Him. It's good to learn to personally worship and praise Jesus. It can take study and practice to get comfortable doing this, but it leads to pure fellowship.

Jesus be with you!

That's the similar advice St Teresa of Avila gave.

When you pray, consider who it is you're praying to?
The King will come to you, and will bring His court
with Him. The Blessed Mother and the Saints.
I'm paraphrasing here. :D
