I have read of people that have claimed to have perceived olefactory 'scents and odours'
at the time they viewed something ~when they weren't sniffing/ no smells around
It would seem to be, that 'a smell-memory' has been triggered
and the brain is then 'sampling' it's reference-copy
ie: the 'memory of a smell' with which it will compare, new smells
It does this so well that people are convinced, they 'smell', that smell
