Cussing in Public

Should it be against the law to cuss in public? By this I mean simply saying the word or words in their own right, not using them in a manner that would violate some other law.

Making up words noone should use and then spending the rest of the time being afraid of those words is...pointless to me.

I voted no. Aside from freedom of speech issues, such a law would likely land me in jail in very short order. I generally don't go around cursing in public. However, I am a clumsy women and have let out lengthy and loud strings of curse words after stubbing my toe or banging my funny bone.

Not that I think it's OK to walk around cursing to our heart's content, but I think there are more important things to worry about than whether or not someone says "fiddlesticks" or something else less socially acceptable whenever they stub their toe.

How can a word be immoral? What power does a word have over you, that you don't give it?

I consider the word Belgium to be offensive. Unless banning swear words bans the word Belgium, I can't possibly contenance it.

No offense but that is an incredibly lame idea. Words are words. Nothing to outlaw

While I do consider cussing in public to be rude, I don't see the need for a law agaist it. How would this law be enforced? I doubt it even would be, it isn't a cop's job to babysit, or force class upon people.

I voted no. Any word outside of the standard verbage found in cussing can be made offensive. It's the tone the word is uttered in, not the word itself. So if it were made illegal people would start making substitions and a whole new list of what is deemed offensive will crop up

Well, I suppose there is that whole award for the best use of the word "Belgium" in a serious screenplay.

I definately voted no, free speech and all. And how do you define cussing? My mom gets all bent out of shape when I say "frikkin" and "sucks" so where do you do draw that line?

With that said, I really think they should do a better job at teaching people to speak intelligently. I'm shocked at the amount of people who can't say a sentence without inserting some amount of profanity. And it really makes me doubt their intelligence, no matter how many degrees they have. Not to mention their creativity. Really.
