Recently my church Pastor and his associate pastor went on a tv show... The show is a reality show where people team up and try to catch fish with their bare hands... The team who catches the larhest fish wins...During the program the associate pastor cursed up a storm while trying to trap a fish... Most of the language was bleeped out ( this was cable)

Our church is split... Some people saying it was inappropriate and he should be disciplined and others calling those are judgmental and haters that they should understand that he is only human and we must show him grace.

What do you think?

Did he repent?

An elder must serve as a model witness for YHWH and Yehoshua by walking in holiness and godliness, as an example to the younger in the faith. Sure, an elder is only a man and has failings, but he should immediately repent of all such failings, and never make a habit of them. If he cannot consistently walk in holiness and godliness, then he should no longer be considered an elder. That doesn't mean that you have to excommunicate him, it just means he shouldn't be in a role where he is upheld as a "model citizen".

Hi dabronx,

I'd be looking for another fellowship. The leadership of this one doesn't sound particularly Spirit filled.

God bless you.
In Christ, Ted

Yes, I know... We are currently attending another church but are thinking of attending NOT for their sermons but to minister... Not sure yet what God wants.

I'm very upset.

What is your evidence that there was cursing?
It could have been beeped out just to cause division as it is obviously doing.

The show left in the first few words... And he admitted it.

I understand that he gave the sermon today and sent me an email asking me to watch... He said that he explained what God has been teaching him these last couple of weeks... I couldn't bring myself to go so I will watch it online.

I'm not being unforgiving, although it must sound like it... I'm having trouble attending a church where the people are more like cult followers than a body of Christ... And the leadership,is nowhere to be found in helping lead us along the path of Truth.

Seems more like they are more concerned with being liked than sharing the Gospel... I plan to watch his sermon... And keep praying about what my place is in all this.

Hi dabronx,

When I was born again one of the very first victories that the Holy Spirit gave me was control of my tongue. I used to cuss like a sailor and thought nothing of using the Lord's name in vain, but almost immediately I was given victory over that sin in my life. Now, I fully realize that not everyone's walk will be exactly like mine, but I think that there are certain 'attitudes' that born again believers share.

I can't imagine having an attitude about a game show that would drive a believer to use such vulgarity. Yes, when a believer smashes his thumb with a hammer, maybe, although I have to say that my testimony is that God even gave me victory over that circumstance and believe me I've hit my thumb with a hammer plenty. One time so hard that I nearly passed out from the spike in blood pressure, but it never crossed my mind to curse about it.

Maybe he's a weak brother and I'm all for supporting him in that way, but my issue, as some others have posted, here is that he is very powerful role model in his position as assistant pastor and I'm honestly just dumbfounded that such a thing would happen.

I stick by my first assessment that you should probably find another fellowship with stronger moral leadership.

God bless you.
In Christ, Ted

Thank you for sharing, Ted... And I agree about finding another place... My husband and son do not share my feelings so for now I have to stick it out. I guess, until The Lord changes their hearts... I have managed to get them to come with me to another church that meets later on Sundays.

ChristianMom... After the shock of watching his terrible witness on TV... Another horror awaited... The fact that MANY others in the church thought there was nothing wrong with what he did... They thought it was funny and some said they were glad to know their pastor is only human... I got vilified for saying, publicly, that I was embarrassed by his behavior and that I would ABSOLUTELY NOT ask my unchurched friends to watch the rerun of the show... I am now somewhat of an outcast at this church complete with folks ignoring me and walking passed me in the halls as if they don't know me.

Their stance is that I should understand he's only human and that in the bigger picture a little "colorful" language doesn't hurt anyone... The main stand of his followers is that they are happy he's just like them.

Even worse... The lead pastor never came out to address the issue until weeks later when he said that the AP deserves grace and that was it... He applauded (i guess himself dont really know) and then began the sermon.
Also, he has not responded to any of my emails.

Sigh.

cursing swearing cussing - saying unedifying words while under duress is evidence of inner anger stress and frustration. that has built up(for from the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks .. i think the congregation should ask themselves - have WE done that to him ?
yes he is wrong to do it , but now ...

now council him .. pray for him , bring about his healing ,that he may be healed of bitterness which springing up within can defile many .

even the lord Jesus digs around a tree in order to aid it in bringing forth healthy fruit ..he certainly does not burn it down so quickly .

give repentance time to be worked in a person - we are not computers -you cannot hit delete and enter and expect instantaneous effect .... the best trees grow slow and deep

Well yes we are all human and have our human nature to fight against. I use to curse up a storm until I grew closer to God. Now if I slip I notice and repent. My husband(not a Christian), will tell me that I don't talk like that anymore. For the congregation to just accept it, isn't right. A sin is a sin is a sin. God doesn't have a list of what sin is the worst, what sin is least. All sin should be looked at as the same. If he had say had an affair, the church wouldn't be so understanding. We make some sins worse than others, when God sees it all as sin.

My husband isn't a Christian. He has given his time to the church I go to, to do carpentry work. He has met a lot of the people there, a lot of the men. Some in my church curse like crazy. My husband would bring it up after working there, asking why the cursed so much.

So doing things like this can be a stumbling block for someone who isn't a Christian. People see God through us. We are to be examples of God's love with Christ living in us. If we aren't showing that, then non-Christians see a distorted God.

Christ's view was not the popular view, for sure! I commend you for speaking on it, and I do think he should be counseled about this.

1 Timothy 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach...

BLAMELESS. That verse is a hard pill to swallow for many who want to allow a person's humanness to get in the way of their spiritual growth. Blameless, meaning that he should abstain from appearance of evil, and should serve as a role model.

I don't even like hearing my bosses at work curse, because its not professional. I would feel the same as you if I heard my pastor curse publicly like that.

This verse just came to mind

Matthew 15:11
It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth.

Amen to that! To me profanity means the person using it does not have a mastery of his own language and uses vulgar words in frustration or to make a point. It could also indicate either a lack of a relationship with the Lord or a weak faith. If that pastor has been to college or seminary it's surprising he is ignorant about the English language but he needs to make an effort to stop using that language. His repenting is a start.

Another place for people to read is James 3:1-12. The whole section is on controlling our tongues.
