I beg to differ,
Colossians verse 3 chapter 8 “But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth”

I state in my book ( that doesn't seem to get published ) that we tend to make excuses for our sins. You say it is ok aslong as we don't direct it towards someone. Foul language is foul language, doesn't matter how you sugar coat it or who it's directed at.

I can see her point though. Before I became a Christian I used to cuss at my friends in jest, as they did also to me, and we thought nothing of it in terms of verbal abuse; rather, we just simply perceived it as a way in which we bonded with each other.

Now, that didn't mean it was right. We never should have spoken to each other in that way, even if we didn't mean any harm by it.

However, there were those times when we were angry with each other and used the same type of language when communicating our feelings towards each other. Of course, since the intent had changed the reaction had changed as well. Hence, it was no longer jest, but abuse.

So I do understand where Moriah is coming from when she speaks of the abuse as being in the motive, and not merely in the words.

Nevertheless, the bottom line is that vulgar language is a byproduct of the carnal nature. Hence, it belongs to the world. And since we (Christians) are not of the world we shouldn't use such language to express ourselves.

Verbal abuse isn't in the delivery; it's in the intent and meaning.
That's how I see things. Sorry if you don't like it.

That is you opinion but nowhere in the Bible is your opinion a fact or confirmed. You are looking for an excuse to cover up your sin. I have heard and seen many things and 99.9% of the people I have met have done that. Made excuses to cover up their sin.

Example " God says he rested on the 7th day" and he asks that we do the same. many people say "Well My work is different from God, so it isn't the same thing, I have to work on Sabbath and don't see any reason not to" See, excuses, exceptions. Always trying to find a "loophole" in the scripture. We all say things at times heck I am 22 I have said a few things here and there and it was never directed to anyone, but I feel bad because it is not language that God would use. Next time you say something like that think to yourself "Would God approve of my language?" No if he did he would be contridicting what was written in the Bible.

Every word has a meaning behind it, if it didn't it wouldn't even be used. Doesn't matter when or where or how you use it. The meaning will be the same. I don't think God is offended by the actual word, it may be the meaning behind it and like I said doesn't matter how you use it, because the meaning is always the same. That's how I see things. Sorry if you don't like it

You are looking for an excuse to cover up your sin.

In this thread we're talking about those who make a practice of using vulgar language.

In light of this context, what makes you so sure she's looking for an excuse to cover up for her sin? And what makes you so sure it is her sin?

Regardless of how the thread started, my last post is what we are talking about now.

I think it is obvious what she and everyone else is trying to cover up. Need I explain it again? I am not one to judge others by what they say or do, but as a man that was brought into this world by God I do have the right to give advice and my views on certian things. heck that is what we were brought into this world to do isn't it?

You told her that she was covering up for 'her sin'. Again, we are talking about people who make a practice of using vulgar language while calling themselves Christians.

With that in mind, how do you know it's her sin?

Perhaps you forgot that you had expressed the following idea in post #23:

I do agree with you that "obscene talk" goes beyond merely the words that we say and encompasses our intentions.

It's funny ... I am just thinking today (as the Anointing of God's Spirit is upon me) that we spend so much time arguing over the rightness or wrongness of things when instead what we really need is to be bathed, immersed, soaked in the Holy Spirit ... He settles ALL disputes and puts Unity and Love in our hearts!!! From inside Him I have no care about this question because I know from Inside Him I will not speak any such things, because it is not who HE is.
