Silent Prayers Too Loud at Holy Redirection
Sept. 9, 2005
Tacoma, Washington, USA -- The silent prayers during the procession were too loud this week here at Holy Redirection Orthodox Church ([bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] Orthodox Church of America). Our intrepid editor was fortunate to be granted an interview with Holy Red's star deacon, Father Deacon Matthew Mark.
OD: So I heard the silent prayers were too loud this week?
MM: I'm not at liberty to discuss that.
OD: Oh, I talked with Father Bill, and he said you could.
MM: Oh, okay. Well we were processing around the church, and the choir was singing the troparion and kontkion for the feast, but when we got to the south side of the building, and I was reading the litany, Father Bill was beside me praying silently so loudly that I couldn't think straight.
OD: What did you do?
MM: Well I thought maybe I was out of turn, so I stopped and looked at him. He nodded at me and said, "Go ahead," so I continued on with the prayers, and he resumed praying silently at a volume that could wake the dead, if we had already begun internment in our cemetery, which we haven't yet, because of the county zoning and permitting process.
OD: Was that the end of it, then?
MM: No, after the service when we were divesting, I asked Fr. Bill if he couldn't pray silently a little more quietly next time. He said that would be fine.
OD: Has Father Bill prayed silently that loudly before?
MM: No, usually when he prays silently it's pretty quiet: just a low murmur. But of course usually he's inside the altar at the holy table, and I'm outside the iconostas praying the litany. His being right next to me made it quite a different scenario. He may pray silently that loudly all the time, and I just didn't notice because of the muffling effects of the iconostas.
OD: So if you had one piece of advice for parish priests, what would it be?
MM: Don't pray silently so loudly that it drowns out the deacon.
OD: Thank you, Father Deacon.
MM: My pleasure.
