My husband and I are missionaries, and my husband works with very poor people in an economically bifurcated society here in Latin America. It is very common for the poor never to marry because they cannot afford the marriage license. And then partly because there is no marriage, the men many times do not feel obligated to stay with one woman and support the family, so there are many men with children by different women and many women with children by different men. It's become sort of a rite of passage into adulthood for a teenage girl to become pregnant. Then all of the other single mothers around her become her friends and helpers - really her family. Someone ought to do a study on this culture; it's very interesting. But it's not of God.

So now a young girl of 17 whom we have become close with has become pregnant. The father writes her love letters, but they do not live together. They cannot afford a house of their own, and their families will not let them live with them unless they are married - even though somehow it's perfectly okay that he got her pregnant! After prayer, my husband asked her if they are not marrying because of money. She cried and said yes. So we have decided along with the girl's pastor to marry her and her "esposo". (it means husband, but that's what girls call their baby-daddies) We will have a ceremony, but they still will not be married in the sight of the law, because they have not had a civil ceremony nor paid for the license.
