It's not about us. That's what author Rick Warren tells us in chapter 1. Life is not about us. Trying to find our purpose by starting with us is like trying to eat a Popsicle by starting in the middle... things break apart and create a mess. On page 17, the author states "The purpose of your life is far greater than your own personal fulfillment, your peace of mind, or even your happiness. It's far greater than your family, your career, or even your wildest dreams and ambitions." Ok then, I can hear you saying it’s not about us so who IS it about? Well, I’ll tell you. It’s about God. According to Ephesians 1:11 The Message, “It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone.” It seems overwhelming to think that a God so great and powerful knows and loves us individually and has a specific reason for each of our lives. Yet God knew us BEFORE we were born, before we were even thought of! And even then He had a purpose in mind for each one of us. For me Psalm 139 says it best “My frame was not hidden from thee. When I was made in secret and skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth, Thine eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in thy book they were all written the days that were ordained for me when as yet there was not one of them.” God has a reason for each one of us! He had a reason for our being born, for the lives we have lived to date. God carefully oversaw each circumstance that we have lived through before it ever happened! And the truths in the above verses give us some special insight into our purpose. On page 20-21, Rick Warren says “You discover your identity and purpose through a relationship with Jesus Christ. God was thinking of you long before you ever thought about Him. His purpose for your life predates your conception. He planned it before you existed, without your input! You may choose your career, your spouse, your hobbies and many other parts of your life, but you don’t get to choose your purpose. The purpose of your life fits into a much larger, cosmic purpose that God has designed for eternity.”

Questions to think about:
What do you think are implications of the first sentence of this book, “It’s not about you”?
In spite of all of the advertising around me, how can I remind myself that life is really about living for God, not myself?
