(I think some nuns have an empty cross in their cells to remind them that they need to put themselves on the cross daily.)

The Carmelites often use empty crosses. Even if ST Therese of Liseaux if often pictured with a crucifix surrounded with a collar of roses.

I am not putting down devotion to the empty cross, I have both in my parents house (only have a crucifix in my dorm though) I was just surprised so many people seemed bothered by devotions that include a crucifix, I do not think there is a real theological problem with this, some people just do not like anything that is differant then what they have, xenophobic

I think the crucifix is a powerful reminder of what the Son of God did for mankind. It is also good for little children because they ask questions of who is that man on the cross. That is the perfect time to tell a very young child about Jesus and that he died for them. And that he loves them very much.
