  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Crossing oneself during RCIA dismissal?

Wow, I can't believe it's been two years since I was last on this forum. Anyways, in that time, my agnostic wife has actually accepted the fact that I am going to become Catholic--we don't fight about it anymore, and she even asks questions about the faith (in a non-confrontational manner). It's amazing how far she has come.

I'm in RCIA now and have a silly question. We recently started to be dismissed after the homily. The RCIA students (myself and one other person), go up in front of the priest and he says a blessing, followed by the sign of the cross over us. Maybe out of habit, or myself not knowing what exactly to do, I crossed myself and said, "Amen." I noticed the other RCIA student did not do anything.

So, if a priest makes the sign of the cross over you, is it proper to make the sign of the cross as well, or is it redundant/not proper? Or is it dependent on the situation?

Thank you all for the advice. Please pray for my wife's conversion, her name is Sarah.

P.S. Also I noticed under my avatar, it says, "faith" and is set to Anglican (which I was.) How do I set that to Catholic?

Contact staff about your faith icon. As far as making the sign of the cross as the priest prays, that's normal from my experience. Praying for both you and your wife on this journey!

1. You acted properly. Crossing oneself is basically very catholic and its hard if not impossible to go wrong by doing so :)

2. Prayers said for Sarah.

3. You send a request to a moderator to have your faith changed.

Crossing yourself is not compulsory. It took me some time to get used to it, as a former Protestant, but I now do it during the mass as part of the liturgy, and have done for some time.

So your compatriot was not out of order in not crossing himself. It's a tradition - not a hard and fast rule.

Suddenly you find yourself making the sign of the cross multiple times aday :)
I do, it's a blessing and visual sign of faith like some sort of a physical credo.
