  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My grandmother crocheted too, but she died when I was too little to learn ( I was about 2). I taught myself to crochet about 22 years ago, using a book. This set up a wonderful mindset for me--if I can read it (the pattern) I can crochet it. Recently I learned to do symbol crochet which opens a whole nuther world of patterns -- many from Europe and Japan are written in symbols only. Don't know if my bookcase will be able to take the strain!

"Symbol Crochet" Thats interesing, how do you do that? Sometimes I have a hard time reading patterns. It can be confusing sometimes, if done by someone who doesn't know how to write it.

Happy New Year!!!

Hope you all enjoyed your Christmas and that it was filled with love.

I didn't get any crocheted or home made items for Christmas. I am the one that primarily does that in my famly, but I did get a couple of gift cards to hobby lobby and a couple of gift certificates for the specialty yarn store downtown.
That's always fun!

I love to crochet. Self taught. I always had a desire to learn but there was no one to teach me so 2 years ago I taught myself. 3 days ago I just found out my grandmother knew how to knit and crochet...go figure why she never told me before.
Lol, you never asked.

Something I do is look online for patterns and only print the good ones. ^_^ Makes it easier on my desks and bookcase. = D

In Symbol crochet you work from a diagram of the work. Each stitch has its own symbol (you can find them in a lot of the magazines and stitch guides). In some ways it is easier than written patterns, esp for doilies, because you can see what the work should look like and spot your mistakes quickly. If you can find an old copy of Magic Crochet magazine (I hear it is out of print now :( ) you can play with the technique.

Unless you are like me--I have printed out tons of vintage patterns that I just "have to have". Then I put them in binders so they stay nice. The binders have to go someplace--hence the groaning bookshelves ^_^ .

Well, I do have a binder or two of patterns on my computer...er...on my dad's comp right now. If he'd ever get the network fixed I might be able to print them out, but as for now if I want to use them, they'll have to stay on the computer. I have my own little, well, not so little, folder of crocheting patterns. Lol.

Yes, I'm sure it is. ^_^ His grandmother taught him. He made a white afghan for my mom the first Christmas we were dating. My mother still has it. He then taught me how to chain and single crochet which was all he knew. I took to it very quickly and began making other projects by following patterns. He hasn't made anything since then. I think it was to impress my mom. ;)

Lol. My granny and I are kinda swopping. She taught me how to do the granny squares she's doing and I teach her how to read patterns. Lol. So far she's been just using word of mouth. Which works well for one or two things, but after awhile you start to get patterns mixed up.

Been awhile since I've posted--between the downtime for the upgrades and having to do credit apps for my husband.

I finally figured out what to do with the yarn my sister sent me to make an afghan for her. Only took me 3 tries! The first pattern didn't use the yarns in the right way -- since she sent more of the aran than the claret and light sage I'm guessing she wants that to be the dominant color, and in this pattern it wasn't. Pattern two looked absolutely yucky! The claret totally washed out the sage when the two were together. Finally, found a pattern in an old calendar--not real lacy, bands of each color _aran, claret, aran, sage, aran....-- the claret and sage are far enough apart to look nice.

Once I get this one done I will need to buy 80 oz of worsted weight in aran for a fishermen's style afghan. It will be a Christmas gift for my son's best friend.

So far I have a black double crochet square. The pattern is for a poncho, G'ma said it starts at the neck and works it's way out.

"Rnd 2:With right side facing, join pink with dc in first ch-2 sp (see joining with Dc page[but I don't have page 10]); ch 3," well, the only thing I can't get is which side is the right side? Or does it matter?

Is the square worked in rounds or do you turn the work? If it is in rounds the right side would be the side facing you when you were working the previous round. If you turn the work after each round the right side would generally be the side facing you as you did round one. A quick trick for future reference--When you work the first round of a square, work a couple stitches over the tail to keep it on the back side as you work. This way you will know the back of the work is the one with the tail sticking out.
