Crochet - getting started

I have at long last sat down and tried to do some crochet. Unfortunately I am having problems getting started. I can make a chain, but I don't like starting that way. My friend taught me to start by making a loop and crocheting into the loop, but I can't remember how exactly she did it. I am absolutely no good at following diagrams either, so will have to wait for Rob to come home and show me.

I am trying to do a granny sqare but I keep ending up with a triangle on the 3rd round. I can't seem to work out where I am going wrong....

On your first round do you have 4 chain spaces? If not you forgot a repeat. Once you have the chain spaces right you should be able to continue on to make a square.

I managed to improve on what I had been doing. I was still making a mistake somewhere along the line. I don't think I am understanding the instructions too well. I have sent my best effort to my friend by post and asked her advise. I also photocopied the pattern and sent that too. It is probably something very silly. I don't know of anyone around here who crochets. I will have to see if anyone at church crochets who might possibly be willing to help me.
BarbaraJean, I hadn't thought of posting a picture. Good idea. I understand tho' that the English and American terminology is different......could be even more confusing lol.
