  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was wondering about any afghans anyone makes. I see a lot of other projects, but I generally do only afghans. That way I don't have to worry much about getting the gauge right. Whenever I have made sweaters, they always come out too big. Anyway, I have made 2 afghans so far this year (2007). The first had 6 strands of yarn all the way through it. The second was just one strand. I started on my next one yesterday. It is a basketweave pattern done in green. Hope to hear from you soon. It is great to find a place where other crocheters are.

Well I haven't been crocheting for long. I started after I gave birth to my son because I wanted to make him a blanket. I'm making it an afghan instead of a baby blanket so he'll be able to use it through the years. I don't really know how to read patterns very well yet so I just kind of make up my own using the stitches I know...sc, dc, etc. The one I'm making my son I chain the width of the afghan (I'm not sure the exact measurement...it could be as wide as you want it) then sc three rows. Then I dc three times in every third stitch and do that the whole way across....then I sc a row. Then I dc in every third stitch in the next row again. Then back to sc three rows. And I just keep repeating that pattern over and over again. It's actually turning out really nice. I'm using a variety of different greens for the color. I also made a scarf for my friend for Christmas using the "shell pattern" I think it's called. I really like crocheting...it's very relaxing. I just need to figure out how to read patterns so I can start making other things besides blankets and scarves.

I have made two afgans full sized for my friends who were married. They were pieced. One was hexagons and the other one was wagon wheel granny squares. I have also made many baby's blankets over the years.
I don't like piecing them. The sewing the pieces together bothers me. I have actually not finished afghans because I had to sew them together.

I have 3 crochet projects going on at once.
(1) I've been working on my first ripple afghan, well actually it's a lap-ghan.
My mother had about 30+ oz of yellow, yellow with sparkle, white & a sparkle yellow white verigated yarn - all soft yars too, so I took a blue waterfall ripple pattern and made it into a yellow ripple afghan. - It'll post some pics when I'm done.

(2) A verigated Baby-colors yarn lapghan from some old pattern my aunt had in a magazine.
I wanted something to do on the long train ride and she had a huge bad of scrap yarn.
But now that I am home the project is small enough to keep in my purse so that when I have to wait anywhere in line I just pull out my chrocheting.
It was kind of funny when I did it the first time at our local Wal-mart. The line for customer service was very long; no soonner than I started chrocheting when a CSM walked by and then you hear a call for more help at customer service over the loud speaker - it works in the check-out lane too ;)

(3) I found a nice pattern for a wrap/shawl and I picked up some jewel-toned yarn. I was going to wait tilll I had finished my other 2 projects, but I just couldn't - I want to see how well it turns out :)

I like going online to find patterns for chrocheting afghans, lap-ghans, scarfts & wraps.

I too often have several projects going on at once, all of them afghans. I currently have 4 afghans going, but I am trying to do one at a time now.

I LOVE your idea about keeping it in your purse and doing it in long lines. I haven't laughed like that in a long time. I just have to try that.

Well I finally finished my shawl. (Project 3)
It only took about 2 days to actually do the shawl, but because I had to rip it out and start over three times (for some reason the shawl wasn't decreasing but looked instead like a giant scarf) it took me about a week before it finally came out right.

Did you all know that the 17th is national project Linus day? They are taking crocheted blankets as well as quilts.
They have always taken crocheted blankets, as well as knitted, fleece and quilted ones.

I've been a blanketeer for Project Linus for about 8 years now.

I love crocheting afghans. I often will use various ideas from patterns adn come up with my own design. I prefer not to be a slave to gauge. I have made granny square afghans,as well as, one piece afghans. Currently, I am doing one for my daughter that started off as a strip of sc fabric and grew from there. I simply attached new yarn on the sides and took it from there. It is made up of various brightly colored sections....lime green, bright turquoise, bright orange, bright pink, bright yellow & the matching variegated yarn. Once it is 3/4 the size I want, I will go around it in rounds with the various colors and add a ruffled edge. My daughter helped me come up with the design and colour scheme.

That sounds nice. Can you post a picture when it is done?
