I can personally think of 5: my dad, my uncle, my cousin who is married to a Christian, my brother's mother-in-law, and the guy who cuts my hair (he's a gay atheist who tells me he wishes he could believe in God and that he envies me)

How many atheists do you know that think it is better to not believe in God? I find that is the rare viewpoint when it comes to the average atheist.

I don't think you're in a position to explain the atheist's point of view, and I think your post reflected an attempt to prove the wisdom of adopting your beliefs, regardless of whether they're true.

However, I don't think I'm in a position to explain the atheist's point of view, either, so I really don't see much point in going on with this. There are plenty of atheists on CF who can speak for themselves, or not, as they choose.

Pre-Christian German spirituality? I've heard that Hitler was into that, not that it means anything related to your situation.
As far as young earth creationism, it is seperate from true Christianity if not mutually exclusive.

Um ... Wasn't it you a few short months ago who posted on this very forum that evolution was to blame for Hitler? If I could actually search this forum I'd quote your post for you. I recall posting quotes from Hitler demonstrating that he justified his hatred of Jews as being part of his 'christian duty'.

Hitler used Christianity, the popular religion in Germany, as part of the glue to hold the masses together. This tactic is a common thread in fascist regimes.

No your representation of what the ToE is, THAT is garbage, it has no resemblance to the ToE. He is giving you the benefit of the doubt by assuming you just don't know any better. I am finding that harder to do given how many times I have seen the ToE explained to you and you STILL pretend it says something different.

Without the cats around to kill the vermin, the plague ran without a natural control; because the rats had less enemies around to keep their numbers down. This is where superstition can get the human population. Leave nature alone...is the moral of the story. I doubt God had anything to do with this...quite the opposite is true. Mankind is its own worst enemy.

Tocis, you are quite right in all that you say and I hope that the many Christians who act this way would see that this is not right and not the way of Christ...we all need to be more like Christ whether or not we believe in him...he was still a man who loved everyone....and that is what this world needs.

I'm sure the superstition against cats wasn't very helpful, but the real problem was the lack of medical understanding. The real damage superstition did in this case, was in how they attempted to treat the disease when it arose.

Anyhow, my original point was that serious detrimental disease predated Darwin by a great bit. Durring this very superstitious time, when the majority of Western Civilization was heavily Christian, a disease arose that wiped out nearly 137 million people, comeing in waves in the 6th, 14th, and 17th centuries.

As a Christian, I agree with the OP!

Every time I see some Christian spouting the "truth" of literal creationism, I find myself wanting do disassociate with them. In America, where YECs are a large part of the population, I find myself agreeing more with non-believers than Christians on origins issues, because what many of the Christians are touting is utter nonsense.
