. They redefined a definition that was originally very loose . The moon and large asteroids like Ceres were also once considered to be planets . The scientific community realized that they needed a better definition of planet . They just tightened up the definition to include only bodies that could clear their lanes gravitationally and neither the moon Ceres nor Pluto met the new criteria
Why did they do it clandestinely then?

If the facts were so obvious, you'd think they would stand on their own merits.

Because this was not an democratic decision that laymen could actually get involved with. This was an astronomers only club because laymen wouldn’t have been knowledgeable about the various aspects of how planets form their behavior, and why they are planets . Remember that the previous definition was basically round objects in the sky that don’t shine by their own light. Almost the same one the ancient Romans and older cultures had

This wasn't about laymen though.

The IAU barred many planetary astronomers from voting.

So what? It doesn't change anything about Pluto, except the name they give it--and you can still think about it as a planet if you want to.

What do you mean, 'so what'?

Academia rigged a vote to expedite Pluto's downgrade.

Had Christians done that, and academia would have been all over it like Thali on Domide.

Remember how they went after us with the "cdesign proponentsists" fiasco?

I mean, so what? Pluto was not harmed or changed and neither was I.

On the other hand, the "cdesign proponentsists fiasco" was about foiling a plot by radical Calvinists to impose a totalitarian theocracy on the US.

Not at all. You should read a book and resist your religious temptation to be so myopic.
