It is written that we are created in His image. If so, then are we also God-like? Can we call each other God? Please explain your answer in detail and provide scripture if possible.

Thank you!

Yes, in some ways we are God-like, but we are not God, we are creatures, so in many other ways we are creature-like.

"God" is a proper noun (singular); "god" is a common noun which can be plural. Similarly, I suppose, with "Man" and "man". You and I could call each other "man", but not "Man". "God" is a proper noun, intended to apply to one entity only.

We are not God nor are we what God looks like. We are created in flesh and
"God is spirit.." (John 4:24). When man was created, he was a perfect being and not subject to death or disease.
God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness" (Genesis 1:26) He was not referring to a mirror image but a likeness of God. A sense of perfection, but not all knowing as the trees planted in the garden of Eden would tell us that.

God has two types of attributes: MORAL and NATURAL.

He imparts His moral attributes (love, joy, peace, longsuffering, etc.) on us through the Holy Spirit, but in no way does He impart His natural attributes (omniscience, omnipresence, omnipotence, transcendence) on us.

Some paintings and sculptures are created in the image of man.. Some like Michaelangelo's David are excellent representations of the image of man..
Even So, no matter how perfect the reproduction, the art work in question can never be a living breathing person.

The same is true with us.. Because we are created in the image of God, we at best have the outward/inward appearance of God. There is lot more to being God than just "looks."

Psalm 82:6-7
6“I said, ‘You are “gods”; you are all sons of the Most High.’ 7 But you will die like mere men: you; you will fall like every other ruler.”

John 10:34-46
Jesus answered them,"Is it not written in your Law, 'I have said you are gods'? If he called them 'gods' to whom the word of God came-and the Scripture cannot be broken-what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, 'I am God's Son'?

Heres some scripture, i hope this helps.

We are given God's Characteristics, or personality. We even have the right to bring life into the world and be as god over children.

An image is not the original, however, when we start imitating the attributes God has given us through his word we then can see God in eachother.

3 John 1:11
Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but* he who does evil has not seen God.

How about it was a fancy way of saying that we are a reflection of God.
God has free will and so do we.
We know the difference between good and evil.
We believe in delayed gratification. (endure present pain for future gain)
We both have the ability to forgive and give grace (unmerited favor)

there are plenty of similarities...these are just a few.

So Paul, standing before the council, addressed them as follows: “Men of Athens, I notice that you are very religious in every way, for as I was walking along I saw your many shrines. And one of your altars had this inscription on it: ‘To an Unknown God.’ This God, whom you worship without knowing, is the one I’m telling you about.

“He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn’t live in man-made temples, and human hands can’t serve his needs—for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need. From one man he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries.

“His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him—though he is not far from any one of us. For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ And since this is true, we shouldn’t think of God as an idol designed by craftsmen from gold or silver or stone.

“God overlooked people’s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now he commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to him. For he has set a day for judging the world with justice by the man he has appointed, and he proved to everyone who this is by raising him from the dead.” (Acts 17:22-31).

Dear CantThinkofaUserName. Only Mankind is like God, able to know the difference between Good, and Not Good. We can think and we can reason. God gave His Commandments to Mankind, because God loves us, and He wants us to live with Him for ever. We are capable of great love, and sadly also, to fall victim to temptation. We are in this world to love God, He is our Maker/Heavenly Father, and also to learn to love each other, and be kind to each other, and forgive each other as God has forgiven us, and belong to Christ. Jesus died that we might live, He reconciled us to God, and He will lead us back to God, our original home. Is there anything in this Universe like us? I say this humbly and with love, CantThinkofaUserName. Greetings from Emmy, sister in Christ.

Think about the wording for a second. Being created in the image of someone/something is different than being that object. For example, I am created in my parents image, meaning I was born carrying some of their attributes, but does that make me my parents? We are created in God's likeness meaning that we take some of His attributes, but we are not him. For example, I want you to create life out of nothing. You can't do that can you? You don't have that power that God has. However, you were made to be like him, so you know that your spirit will be eternal just as God is eternal, but human spirits will be either in Heaven or Hell.

I hope that may make sense to you. :)

Hi,

In my studies one of my favorite biblical expositors covered this issue.
This subject was covered by H A Ironside on his lectures on Colossians.

Here gos

pg 106

God created man, we are told, "in His own image, after His own likeness, male and female created He them, and called their name Adam in the day they were created" (Gen 5:2). Physically perfect, they were morally innocent, and spiritually like unto God, who is a Spirit and the Father of spirits. But in the very next verse we read, "Adam begat a son in his own likeness after his image" (Gen 5:3). This was after sin had defiled his nature and posioned the springs of life; and all his children now bear this fallen image and likeness.

Hence the need of regeneration, and so our Lord said to Nicodemus, "That what is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." He is not merley saying that which is born of the physical body is a physical body, but that personality which comes into the world through natural generation and birth is one with the fallen nature that Adam acquired when he fell . This is called distinctively, "the flesh," "the body of the flesh," "sin in the flesh'" "sin that dwelleth in us," "the carnal mind which is not subject to God, neither indeed caa be"; and is the nature of the old man-the unregenerate natural man. We are told that we were all by nature children of wrath, even as others. When converted or regenerated, this carnal nature is not altered in the slightest degree; it is never improved or sanctified, either in whole or part. In the cross of Christ God has condemned it utterlyas to vile for improvement. The believer has recieved a new nature which is spiritual, the nature of the new man; and he is now responsible to walk in obedience to the Word of God, which appeals only to his new nature. The old and new natures will remain in the believer untill the redemption of the body.

H A Ironside folks

Praise Jesus, Although this is written to believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, I believe it may clear up some of your questions
