There are more than two covenants. We don't "send" a covenant away. A covenant is an agreement between two parties, how do you send an agreement away?
But let's find some learning here... where does the Scriptures first speak of a covenant between God and anyone? Might that be the first covenant? Where is this found?

Well, apparently that dictionary was not written by Jews 2000 years ago.

If you want to understand the true meaning of BIBLICAL "Covenant", you must understand what Jews - including Jesus - meant when they used the word.

I presume that you possess this understanding, apart from any standard dictionary or religious dictionary. If so, please provide the appropriate citations so we can properly understand its true meaning.

Our attention has been called to the above subject in the past week by the receipt of a brochure of twenty-one pages published by the International Religious Liberty Association entitled, "Appeal and Remonstrance." embodying resolutions adopted by the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventists (Feb. 24, 1893). The resolutions criticize and censure, with much acerbity, the action of the United States Congress, and of the Supreme Court, for invading the rights of the people by closing the World's Fair on Sunday.



The Adventists are the only body of Christians with the Bible as their teacher, who can find no warrant in its pages for the change of day from the seventh to the first. Hence their appellation, "Seventh-day Adventists". Their cardinal principle consists in setting apart Saturday for the exclusive worship of God, in conformity with the positive command of God Himself, repeatedly reiterated in the sacred books of the Old and New Testaments, literally obeyed by the children of Israel for thousands of years to this day and endorsed by the teaching and practice of the Son of God whilst on earth.
Per contra, the Protestants of the world, the Adventists excepted, with the same Bible as their cherished and sole infallible teacher, by their practice, since their appearance in the sixteenth century, with the time honored practice of the Jewish people before their eyes have rejected the day named for His worship by God and assumed in apparent contradiction of His command, a day for His worship never once referred to for that purpose, in the pages of that Sacred Volume.



What Protestant pulpit does not ring almost every Sunday with loud and impassioned invectives against Sabbath violation? Who can forget the fanatical clamor of the Protestant ministers throughout the length and breadth of the land against opening the gates of the World's Fair on Sunday? The thousands of petitions, signed by millions, to save the Lord's Day from desecration? Surely, such general and widespread excitement and noisy remonstrance could not have existed without the strongest grounds for such animated protests.



And when quarters were assigned at the World's Fair to the various sects of Protestantism for the exhibition of articles, who can forget the emphatic expression of virtuous and conscientious indignation exhibited by our Presbyterian brethren, as soon as they learned of the decision of the Supreme Court not to interfere in the Sunday opening? The newspapers informed us that they flatly refused to utilize the space accorded them, or open their boxes, demanding the right to withdraw the articles, in rigid adherence to their principles, and thus decline all contact with the sacrilegious and Sabbath-breaking Exhibition.



Doubtless, our Calvinistic brethren deserved and shared the sympathy of all the other sects, who, however, lost the opportunity of posing as martyrs in vindication of the Sabbath observance.



They thus became "a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men," although their Protestant brethren, who failed to share the monopoly, were uncharitably and enviously disposed to attribute their steadfast adherence to religious principle, to Pharisaical pride and dogged obstinacy.



Our purpose in throwing off this article, is to shed such light on this all important question (for were the Sabbath question to be removed from the Protestant pulpit, the sects would feel lost, and the preachers be deprived of their "Cheshire cheese".) that our readers may be able to comprehend the question in all its bearings, and thus reach a clear conviction.



The Christian world is, morally speaking, united on the question and practice of worshipping God on the first day of the week.



The Israelites, scattered all over the earth, keep the last day of the week sacred to the worship of the Deity. In this particular, the Seventh-day Adventists (a sect of Christians numerically few) have also selected the same day.

Thank you for posting your source. I have heard of Scott Hahn, but have not read his book. Lest I presume that he is the sole inventor of this particular definition, could you cite his passages and, in particular, any footnotes or endnotes as to his sources for this definition as it is, to say the least, unknown in standard dictionaries and theological dictionaries?

While there are several covenants mentioned within the Bible, Paul in Galatians 4 Paul chose to speak of the two major covenants. That would be the covenant made with Israel at Sinai – which is referred to as a covenant of the flesh and of bondage, and the covenant of the “freewoman” – a covenant of promise and, by inference, a covenant of freedom.

You (hopefully) have noticed that this is an allegory. And while one does not literally “send away” or “cast out” a covenant per se, Paul is saying that the covenant of “flesh and bondage” is to be “rejected” in lieu of and in favor of the covenant of promise and freedom.

As far as any learning goes, Paul is clearly teaching that we need to be children of the “freewoman”, which is allegorical of the other covenant mentioned in 4:24, which is a covenant of promise and freedom – cf. Galatians 5:1.

If Paul is telling us that the covenant from Sinai is to be "cast off" - as I believe he is, then why is the sabbath or any other article from that Sinai covenant valid today?

Should we not be concerned today with the covenant of promise and freedom - and all the articles contained therein?

Nice to know that Catholics hang onto some part of covenant thought through a converted covenantalist. But ... I have seen no weight Hahn has with the Roman See, so why would I read him and not the Pontiff or councils?

The two covenants are the LAW and GRACE. You seem to be under the assumption that Gal 4:22-32 is speaking about an Old Covenant vs. New Covenant perspective. This is an incorrect perspective.

Paul said in Galatians 4:24 -

Are you arguing semantics? Paul says there are TWO covenants.

Paul says ONE of the covenants was from Sinai - which I would call the "old" covenant made with ISrael and Israel ONLY. Paul then spends a good amount of time explaining why NO ONE should want to be a part of that covenant now.

The Hebrew writer (I believe it to be Paul) refers to these covenants as the "old" and the "new" - I just don't choose to limit my information.

As for "law" and "grace" - in a word these are the distinguishing characteristics of the "old" and "new" covenants.

Correct, and he's speaking of the LAW which was given to Moses at Mt.
Sinai. I'm sure we agree on that.

And you are making a couple of mistakes. The Bible tells us clearly
that the covenant came 430 years before the law;

Gal 3:17 And this I say, [that] the covenant, that was confirmed
before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty
years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none
effect.

The Bible also tells us clearly that this Old Covenant wasn't just to
Jews, but to Gentiles also;

Gal 3:8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the
heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham,
[saying], In thee shall all nations be blessed.
Gal 3:9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful
Abraham.

So the Old Covenant clearly was NOT THE LAW, and the Old Covenant was NOT TO ISRAEL ONLY according to the Bible.

The covenant which is the law? You're correct. But not the Old
Covenant, the Abrahamic Covenant, which came 430 years earlier.
