Country Song Breaks Record for Longest Running No. 1 Song in US History

Less than a year ago, nobody knew the name Lil Nas X. Now, his song "Old Town Road" has set the record for longest time spent atop the Hot 100 singles chart.

The country-rap song has now occupied the top spot for 17 weeks, a feat that has not been achieved across the chart's six-decade history. Last week, the song was in a three-way tie for the previous record with "One Sweet Day" (1995) by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men and the "Despacito" remix (2017) by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber.

I never thought a country song would be the one to break such a record. I still the Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men collab is better.

I love both country music and hip hop. This song is not a good country song nor a good hip hop song!

There are a few songs here and there that show someone still remembers what the genre is supposed to be, like "Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset".

Music isn't supposed to "sound like" or be something specific, it evolves over time. There are influences from other genres, progression into new sounds, implementation of new ideas, etc., the notion of immutability of a genre is the exact opposite of art. Whenever I see people talk about how music should be, I just think, "Get off my lawn!" And then I start chuckling at the idea that when Mozart and Beethoven dominated the music world, there were probably probably lamented the loss of real music like that of Bach and Vivaldi.

Music evolves, that's why rock from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and so on, sounds distinct as time progresses. That's why trap artist and Grandmaster Flash occupy the same genre, yet sound completely different. When I hear people complain, the get off my lawn vibes are strong.

These days, there's more traditional "country" music coming from urban hipsters and indie pop genres than there is from the Nashville machine.
