  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Counting The Day Until Trump's Power Is Greatly Diminished (10,9,8)

The Senate and the House want and need the tax bill to be signed. It will be signed next week.

After that, perhaps there will be a compromise between Trump and Congress on keeping the government running, likely including a DACA compromise.
======
And then comes 2018, with Republicans running as far away from Trump as they can. Of course, there are lots of Republicans (mostly trump's base) whose seats aren't in jeopardy. They can afford to remain loyal and even have Trump show up at rallies.

You aren't getting an diminishing of President Trump's influence until he hits term limits in 2024.

I believe that Trump's influence will diminish as soon as the tax bill is signed. He'll still have lots of influence. And yes, he could get re-elected, if the Democrats don't work out how to get together behind a winning candidate and campaign strategy.

Lol. It'll be a shocker if he makes it to 2020.

This hot on the statements of many that it would be a shocker if Donald Trump:
  • Seriously stayed in the primary race, rather than using it as a publicity stunt.
  • Stayed in the primary race until votes were actually taken.
  • Won even a single state in the primary.
  • Managed to remain in the primary race until only the serious candidates remained.
  • Won the primary race.
  • Actually received the Republican nomination (rather than having it taken away from him due to procedural trickery).
  • Managed to stay competitive in the presidential race for any length of time.
  • Managed to become president.
  • Managed to actually be inaugurated.
  • Managed to stay president for any significant length of time before being impeached.
And yet we're still meant to take seriously predictions that he will be removed from office before 2020.

Just get prepared to make the statement: "Sure President Trump may have won the 2020 with a bigger margin than the 2016 election, but it'll be a shocker if he isn't impeached within a month of his second term."

Perhaps you and I have a different understanding of the meaning of the word "diminish". Trump's influence over the last 12 months has been, well what it has been. I expect that his influence next year will be less, and even less in 2019 after the off-year elections.

I don't see any significant way that his influence has diminished.

I'm not claiming that his influence is absolute; among other things the complete resistance of the GOP elite has been obvious and shameful, and that has cut into his influence.

I agree that Trump could be re-elected. I would note that you mentioned no event since being elected, other than not yet being impeached by his own party, apparently a great accomplishment.

To deflect, were you one of those who posted here that Obama was sooooo bad that he couldn't possibly be re-elected, and would lose big time?

That's because the topic is the repeated insistences by his opponents that he's just about to lose all his political power. These were around from literally his first day in the political arena and have continued until this day, despite nothing ever coming of them. The list was not a list of his accomplishments, as a basic recognition of the context of the statement would have made obvious.

To deflect, were you one of those who posted here that Obama was sooooo bad that he couldn't possibly be re-elected, and would lose big time?

I was not, and you can check my post history if you want. The GOP had long since proven that there was no election that they could not manage to screw up, so claiming that President Obama could not possibly win would be foolishness.

You are adding to my statement. I did NOT say that his influence has diminished. I predicted that his influence will be less than in 2018 than in 2017, and even less in 2019.

There are 2 critical agenda items before year end (the tax bill and the budget), and then, and then, we'll see.

fair enough

I wasn't accusing. I was just asking for information, in order to better understand your position.

I was not, and you can check my post history if you want. The GOP had long since proven that there was no election that they could not manage to screw up, so claiming that President Obama could not possibly win would be foolishness.

I congratulate Trump on the economy. He didn't mess it up. He could have interfered with the Fed. He could have imposed tariffs. He could have torn up current trade agreements. He did tear up a lot of regulations.

Instead, he did the only two things that the donors required: get a Supreme Court nominee approved and getting them billions and billions through an acceptable change in the tax law. And yes, I congratulate him on the new tax law. And again, he did the best that he could, he butted out.

Given his campaigning all the promises, doing no harm was indeed a great thing, and great surprise.

And the hope for tax law changes certainly has helped the market. The market has responded to the tax plan coming closer to being signed, and the fact that this was more than corporations and the rich could have expected.

It was argued on TV tonight that it has already diminished. The GOP is going to refuse to confirm those two unqualified judges.
