  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Sure, if there was a guy who was trying to do great immediate harm to others, and I killed him to stop him, why would I feel guilty? Bad maybe, but not guilty. I'm also assuming it was necessary to kill him to stop him in time, before he hurt whoever, like he was armed and I had to shoot him and didn't have time for something less drastic.

If I caught someone hurting, molesting, or otherwise doing great harm to my child I would absolutely no remorse at ending their worthless life. For worthless is what it is if you do those sorts of things.

I bet many people will not like me after this explanation :( First off, I voted yes.

One day, a little over a year ago (I still lived with mom in a house, not an appartment), a few months before school was out some idiot tried to break into my house. I had seemingly just gotten to sleep and I was awoken this odd sound at the door and the dog (a timberland shepherd, trained as an attack dog) go into angry mode. Being the crazy guy I am, and legal or not, I hopped out of bed, grabed my shotgun (12 ga remmy 870 with a slug barrel, as I hadnt put the smoothbore back on yet after some slug practice) and found 4 rounds of 00 buck. I went to my bedroom window and saw some looser dressed in black (he wasnt a cop or police, id know. Im friends with most officers including swat; wasnt neighborhood security and wasnt a neighbor either; also no one had business with us at midnight) trying to pick my front door. I ran to a shadowy spot in the hallway that connected my room to the main hall. I aimed neck level and the distance was very short, but it would be near impossible to see me due to the lighting and the properties of the glass door, but I could see him clearly. If this guy merely opened the door or tries to break it the dog wouldnt have a chance to eat him he would have been dead so fast. I dont know what was up with this guy, or why he would use picking tools on a front door, but he was at the mercy of me knowing that if he didnt cross the threshold of the door and I shot Id be in big trouble, much moreso than if he got in. Then my mom finally shows up in the hall (wonderin where the heck she was) with a white robe on, freaks out, and the guy runs. No shots fired, happy me. Mom was pretty shaken up too. Her, moreso than me.

But its the afterthought that makes it kinda disturbing. Without thought I knew exactly what was required to be done and I had absolutly no problem if such force was required. Its my ease that scares me, and how I could care less; it was like pre-programmed that I act that way and not care. I honestly feel that there is something wrong with me in that regard, almost like a psyche disease. Not only would I not feel any guilt, but I could do it as swiftly. I think thats somewhat sick.

There is so much that happened there that was illeggal, anyone reading, please dont remingd me. I can list everything that was un-lawfull.

Cant life just be a bummer sometimes?

Yes. I likely would be able to do that. An ugly scenario, but one I might do if I
deemed necessary to save anothers life that person was threatening to end.
Excessive force is common in such cases though "just to make sure" so the
legality might of course be arguable.

I think I could to protect members of my family or even myself but I can't imagine anyone not feeling some guilt. Even police officers who know they had to shoot someone feel guilt about it. Even if justified I would hope the average person feels some remorse for taking a life.

While taking another human life is never really right, it can very well be the "best" of all available bad choices.

Is it wrong to kill a little girl I meet on the street? You bet it is.

Is it wrong to apply the "finaler Rettungsschuß" (as we call it in Germany if a violent criminal is killed by a police sniper because he is about to kill a number of innocent people. Happens very rarely over here, but still, sometimes...)? Say, to a terrorist like those who killed hundreds of children in a Russian school some time ago? I say it's as "right" as killing can ever be.

'nuff said.

I think I probably could but I know I would feel badly - even if it was a dire situation. Like someone else said - even the police feel badly - you would not have a conscious if you didn't.
And to the OP who had the situation with the guy trying to break in - don't feel bad for not feeling bad, part of that is your own mind's defensive mechanism for dealing with feelings you're not quite prepared for. Maybe it was some guilt knowing that what you were contemplating was really unlawful?

I kill people all the time, it brings me great joy.

I use knives, handguns, rocket launchers, BFG 9,000's, gernades, photon canons, particle beams, chronoceptors, nail guns, and some other things. This is mostly in video games, but video games are even more real than reality.
